Kings of Con 2 Header

Kings of Con debuted Tuesday on the new Comic-Con HQ channel, and boy, the laughs are delivered! This delicious little satirical nugget follows Rob Benedict and Richard Speight Jr. as caricatures of themselves. Their actor friends join the fun and play over the top as well.

I got a chance to talk to Rob about his new show and a bit of other stuff. Check it out below.

Rob starts us off:

Rob Benedict: Kings of Con is a passion project of me and Richard Speight Jr. We’ve been doing conventions for the TV show Supernatural since 2009. And every year, we do more and more, and we travel the globe and have amassed quite a few stories from our shenanigans on the road. About 3-4 years ago, we thought, ‘This should be a show. We gotta write this down.’ I compiled notes over the years of funny things that would happen or funny things we said. So we got together, and the 1st thing we wanted to do was to make something that would be seen by people. So we went to the fans and we did an Indiegogo campaign, to finance this little teaser of what the show might look like. And we raised a lot of money in a short amount of time. And that attracted the attention of Lionsgate and Comic-Con, who were forming a network at the time. So they came on board and said, “Hey, we wanna help you make this show. Which is perfect for us. It’s the perfect home for us, and it led us to make this series. So we’ve got 10 episodes and it’s premiering on the 15th of November, and it follows the characters of Rob and Rich who are caricature-ized versions of ourselves, sort of through the convention circuit, and the shenanigans (my new favorite word) we get into. And really it’s about our relationship and the relationship with the other actors… and really the craziest people at the conventions are the actors themselves.

Geeks of Doom: (Laughs – I ask no question. I just laugh)

Rob Benedict: People ask, “Are people crazy at these conventions?” We’re like, “No. We’re pretty much the craziest people in the room.” The people at these conventions are like doctors and lawyers and writers. They’re very established… professors, or like, “We help the homeless.” And then it’s like us at the table like, “We’re actors…” (laughs)… so we’re pretty lame.

Geeks of Doom: Hey… so you Supernatural guys seem to do a lot of stuff together, and I’ve seen hints of Misha and Jared and Jensen and I interviewed Misha for his Gishwhes thing – I saw you guys on the Live [Facebook] thing, and you guys did Tough Mudder together… I did Tough Mudder too once and almost died. (Laughs)

Rob Benedict: (Serious) Yeah.

Geeks of Doom: I seriously almost died. I will never do that again.

Rob Benedict: (Completely serious) No. (I think we bonded over the mutual potential death of Tough Mudder but I’ll save that exploration for the next interview).

Geeks of Doom: So how much did the guys, your buddies, really jump into it? Because I only saw the hints. Are they in a lot of episodes? You guys seem very supportive of each other, but how much are they in there?

Rob Benedict: Through the years we’ve developed this really close friendship on the road. We’re literally traveling about 20 weekends a year, and everyone goes to every convention. Jared and Jensen are there. So we’ve become really close. Rich and I, when we decided to make this, we went out to all of our actor friends, the Supernatural people, and just people that we’ve worked with throughout our career. Most of the people on the show… there’s a core group of people that are sort of the main characters. We’ve got a lot of sort of guest stars that appear in like one episode. Misha and Jensen and Jared are in one episode. They had a lot of fun . And Ron Livingston is in one episode. It’s kind of akin to what Ricky Gervais did in Extras.

Geeks of Doom: Yeah.

Rob Benedict: You would have an episode where Sir Patrick Stewart is on. That kind of format.

Geeks of Doom: That’s so cool. (I’m twelve)

Geeks of Doom: So I know that there’s the doctors and lawyers, but it does seem to get a little crazy with the fans that cry and wanna touch you and stuff. Did you experience something like that for real or did you exaggerate something on the show, or a fan just going… I don’t want to say out of line because there’s real love behind it, but maybe overboard?

Rob Benedict: The thing about the fans is that they are all working professionals and very bright people who are just fans of a thing, like when you go to sporting event and you see those dudes who take their shirts off and paint themselves blue at a Giants game. but yeah, there’s that kind of thing. There’s some crazy costumes that people have and we do have a fun bit with a woman who is cosplaying as my character on the show.

Geeks of Doom: Oh… get outta here! That’s fun!

Rob Benedict: Yeah. It was a fun bit. but the fans are really the backdrop because we really are backstage. But that’s what funny and exciting about that. People make things, awesome stuff. They’re fans that are likeminded that are passionate about one thing. Rich and I are like normal dudes. We are working actors. We’re not the kind of people that can never go out because people are recognizing us everywhere.

Geeks of Doom: Oh, yes you are. Stop it!

Rob Benedict: We are like in this microcosm in this one little weekend people think that we’re such a big deal, and then we go home and people are like, “Who are you again?” So like the whole wanting to touch and stuff, and we’re like, “Sure. Whatever.”

Geeks of Doom: Is Chuck coming back to Supernatural? I know… You can’t tell me!

Rob Benedict: I don’t know. Of course if I did know, I couldn’t tell you.

Geeks of Doom: I know. I know.

Rob Benedict: He certainly will come back at some point

Geeks of Doom: I mean, he has to.

Rob Benedict: He’s God.

Geeks of Doom: It’s very exciting. I showed my husband the trailer and he was like, “I wanna review it.” I said, “No! You do the horror movies and I do the TV shows!”

Rob Benedict: (Laughs) I got it. I got it.

Geeks of Doom: We are both big fans of you and Richard. When Trickster left [Supernatural], we were like, “NO!!” You really should have brought him back to life before you left.

Rob Benedict: I know I should’ve tried.

Geeks of Doom: I know. I know. Thank you. We’re just like hanging out and talking… with the other people (interviewers) here.

Rob Benedict: (Laughs)

Geeks of Doom: And… I think I’m done (I’m a total interview hog). Thank you for talking with me.

Rob Benedict: Thank you.

My turn was then over but my other two writers-in-arms asked about availability in Canada (on the Comic-Con HQ app), how much of the show was real (little to lots of nuggets), and what he is most proud of (all of it-“napkin idea” start to here).

Kings of Con air Tuesdays on Comic-Con HQ.
