Black Metal Friday: Metallica’s “ManUnKind” Gives First Look At Mayhem Film ‘Lords Of Chaos’

Why on Earth is GoD featuring aMetallica video for Black Metal Friday, you ask? Well, just two days ago, the trash metal legends released videos for all 13 tracks from their highly anticipated tenth studio album Hardwired…To Self-Destruct, which is available worldwide today, November 18, 2016, via the band’s own Blackened Recordings label.

One of those clips was for the song “ManUNkind” and featured a group of actors performing onstage in corpse paint and bearing a striking resemblance to the notorious Norwegian band Mayhem. I had commented in my review of Hardwired… To Self-Destruct yesterday that I thought it was just Metallica’s way of trolling the metal trolls. Well, it turns out that it is actually our first look at Lords Of Chaos, the upcoming feature film following the almost surreal saga of Mayhem.

You probably recall some of the controversy that surrounded Mayhem; a band known outside the black metal community more for its criminal acts than its music outside. Original singer Dead was a mentally unstable youth who liked to inhale the scent of dead birds before going onstage and would bury his clothing in the forest to give it an air of Au De Grave. Before the band could even release its first album, Dead would take his own life via a shotgun blast to the head inside the cabin that the band shared. He left a note that simply said “Sorry for all of the blood.” Instead of calling the authorities upon finding the body, Mayhem guitarist and leader Euronymous took a trip into town to get film for his camera to immortalize the bloody scene (which would later turn up as the cover photo for the band’s live album and only recording to feature Dead’s vocals, Live in Leipzig). It is also rumored that Euronymous sent some of Dead’s skull fragments to select members of the black metal “inner circle.”

With the addition of bassist Varg Vikernes (aka Count Grishnackh), the story would take an even more bizarre turn. It turned out that Varg was a white power, national socialist who liked to blow off steam by burning down thousand-year-old churches and would later, as the result of a contract dispute, stab Euronymous 23 times on the steps of his apartment building resulting in the guitarist’s death. Vikernes would serve 16 years in prison before being released on good behavior. While still a vile excuse for a human being, Varg has released some of the most seminal music in black metal history under his one-man project Burzum.

The movie is adapted from the 1998 book Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground New Edition by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind.

The video clip for “ManUNkind” was directed by Jonas Ã…kerlund, himself a former member of Swedish black metal pioneers Bathory (he also directed Beyonce’s “Lemonade”!)

The video, just like the film, stars Rory Culkin as Euronymous (Øystein Aarseth), Emory Cohen as Varg Vikernes, Jack Kilmer as Dead, Valter Skarsgård as Mayhem drummer Faust, and Sky Ferreira as a groupie named Ann-Marit.

The film is set to be released sometime in 2017.
