Looking at the first trailer for The Zookeeper’s Wife, one might assume that film was getting ready for the awards’ season. In truth, it’s going to be released months after the awards season has ended. But that shouldn’t take away from the message of the film, especially now.
That’s because the film is based on the true story of Antonina Zabinska (portrayed by two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain) who with her family cares for Zoo animals in 1939 Poland. When the country is invaded by Nazis, she takes it upon herself to hide Jews and smuggle them out of the country, which in turn puts her and her entire family at risk. Check out the full trailer below.
Directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider, MacFarland, USA), The Zookeeper’s Wife sees Chastain as a strong woman who commits herself to stopping evil and tyranny in her own way. Lutz Heck (Daniel Bruhl) is the new chief zoologist for the Nazi regime who harasses Antonia to no end and firmly believes that she is harboring Jews illegally within her sanctuary. It certainly has an inspiring message, and hopefully, it will inspire a few to stand up for what is right.
Here’s the official film synopsis:
The real-life story of one working wife and mother who became a hero to hundreds during World War II. In 1939 Poland, Antonina Zabinska (portrayed by two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Zabinski (Johan Heldenbergh of “The Broken Circle Breakdown”), have the Warsaw Zoo flourishing under his stewardship and her care. When their country is invaded by the Nazis, Jan and Antonina are stunned – and forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Daniel Brühl of “Captain America: Civil War”). To fight back on their own terms, Antonina and Jan covertly begin working with the Resistance – and put into action plans to save lives out of what has become the Warsaw Ghetto, with Antonina putting herself and even her children at great risk.
The Zookeeper’s Wife is in theaters March 31, 2017.
