Today is Ridley Scott‘s 79th birthday. So happy birthday, Mr. Scott. The man who brought us Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and The Martian, not to mention the many other films and TV shows he is a producer on. He is currently hard at work putting the finishing touches on Alien: Covenant.
So to help celebrate this momentous occasion a new behind-the-scenes photo from the set of Scott’s upcoming film has been released. If you think a simple image being released on the Internet isn’t enough, well then you should be happy to know that the Directors Guild of America is giving the Academy Award-winning director a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in film. Check out the image below.
The “space jockey” is obviously a recurring element of the Alien franchise. Their ties (or origins) were explained in Prometheus, and it comes as no surprise that we will see them again in Alien: Covenant. Other than that, there is really no telling what their role in the film will be.
As for that other birthday surprise, DGA President Paris Barclay is awarding Scott the Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Achievement in Motion Picture Direction, one of the organization’s top honors. Here’s what Barclay had to say:
“Masterful in any genre, Ridley’s groundbreaking methods and peerless directing instincts have brought to life some of the most memorable films of our time, capturing the resilience of the human spirit and captivating the hearts and minds of audiences around the world. Stunning visuals, immersive worlds and powerful performances underpin his diverse body of work which ranges from Alien, Blade Runner and Thelma & Louise to Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, and, most recently, The Martian. Over the course of four decades, his trailblazing career has demonstrated the impact and importance of the director’s singular vision. For these reasons, and so many more, we are honored to present the Lifetime Achievement Award in feature film to Ridley Scott.”
While a trailer has yet to appear, we get a sense that Scott is returning the Alien franchise to its roots, at least based on the look of the poster.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers a dark world whose sole inhabitant is David (Michael Fassbender), the synthetic survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.
Alien: Covenant opens in theaters on May 19, 2017.
