The biggest superhero movie news bit to come out of last weekend was the release of the first trailer for James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. While the sequel is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it doesn’t have an actual connection to the main Marvel heroes considering the cosmic distance between the two.

Now Gunn is elaborating on how his film will remain distant from what is going on in the MCU. And in other Guardians Vol. 2 news, Vin Diesel is doing some extra hyping by addressing a fight possible fight between Hulk and Groot, and a maybe spinoff with Rocket and Groot. Check out more on these stories below.

Let’s get the MCU connection out of the way first. Gunn took to Twitter to explain to a fan how disconnected Guardians Vol. 2 is to the MCU. Here’s what he had to say:

Gunn is talking about if working within a continuity like the Marvel Cinematic Universe interferes with his creative process. Based on his statement, it doesn’t. And to be fair, it should stay that way. With no official interactions with the Avengers, it doesn’t make any sense to force a connection between the two franchises. Crazy rumors of Tony Stark venturing far out into space to meet Rocket surfaced during the Iron Man 3 press tour, and of course, that rumor was quickly debunked. Gunn was also happy to debunk the rumor that a Planet Hulk storyline would be used in Vol. 2. Eventually, that storyline would find its way to Thor: Ragnarok, which makes a little bit more sense, at least on a tonal level.

But just because Star-Lord and his crew don’t interact with the Avengers doesn’t mean their supporting cast can’t interact with each other. As some of you may recall, Sif paid a visit to The Collector in Thor: The Dark World. Gunn just may be responding to the fact that we shouldn’t expect to see any member of the Guardians engage in a meaningful dialogue with the Avengers, Doctor Strange, or Spider-Man, at least not while he’s around.

Moving on. The source of the Hulk vs. Groot fight and possible Rocket and Groot spinoff, comes from none other than Vin Diesel, who voices Groot in the film. For one thing, this is nothing more than Diesel just making some offhand comments. To put it simply, he’s just doing some extra hype. While at the Comic-Con Experience 2016 in Sao Paolo, Brazil, the actor spoke to ScreenJunkies to talk about the possibility of a Rocket and Groot spinoff. Here’s what he had to say:

“I think if it’s up to James Gunn, you are going to see a Groot/Rocket movie after Infinity Wars. I think that’s highly possible. We shall see.”

Making those sort of statements isn’t out of the ordinary. So expect a few to follow up on that with him as we get closer to the release of the film. But, I suspect that nothing will come of it considering that Marvel likes to keep things very close to the vest, even if that means keeping a secret from their actors. However, it is what the actor said about a fight between Hulk and Groot that may have some people intrigued.

“I know that, somewhere in the universe, you are going to see Groot and Hulk battle. I know it. You can write it somewhere. You are going to see that poster: Hulk vs. Groot.”

Interesting. Is Diesel hinting at Hulk and Groot fighting each other during Avengers: Infinity War or the Avengers film that follows it? Or maybe we will see the two fight sooner than that? It is possible, but very unlikely, that Hulk could fight Groot in an after credit scene for Ragnarok. The Thor sequel will take place in the cosmos, so if these two had to meet and engage in a fight, it would be in that film.

You can check out the ScreenJunkies video below to see more of what Diesel had to say.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in theaters on May 5, 2017.
