Back in 1986 Frank Oz, director of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, What About Bob?, Bowfinger, The Score, and Death at a Funeral; as well as the voice actor behind Yoda, Muppets Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Animal; and Grover, Bert, and Cookie Monster on Sesame Street among others, directed Little Shop of Horrors. The movie was based on the off-Broadway musical of the same name from Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman, which was itself based on the low-budget 1960 Roger Corman movie The Little Shop of Horrors.
Now a new remake of the title is in development at Warner Brothers, and they’ve found a director for the project. It’s being reported that Greg Berlanti will direct the remake, from a screenplay written by Matthew Robinson.
The remake is said to also be a musical, a new take on Oz’s ’86 movie, which followed a florist shop worker named Seymour who’s raising a plant which needs human blood to survive, forcing Seymour to find humans to feed it.
Berlanti is best known for his work in television. He’s a creator, writer, and executive producer on series like Everwood, No Ordinary Family, The Tomorrow People, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and the upcoming Riverdale. He also wrote and co-executive produced episodes of Dawson’s Creek. As far as movies go, he directed romantic comedies Life as We Know It and The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy, and he’s attached to direct the DC movie Booster Gold. He also worked on the screenplays for Green Lantern and Wrath of the Titans.
Robinson co-wrote and co-directed the 2009 comedy The Invention of Lying with Ricky Gervais. He also worked on the script for the upcoming Monster Trucks, which you can find a trailer for right here.
Marc Platt is producing this new take on Little Shop of Horrors, with Sarah Schechter executive producing.
