‘Deadpool 2’: Ryan Reynolds On The Sequel’s Tone and Tim Miller’s Departure

Deadpool

The X-Men film franchise may look bleak now, but that hasn’t stopped Fox from moving forward with its lucrative Marvel titles. Rumor is that they are prepping to shoot New Mutants as early as next year in Montreal, where they previously shot X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse. There’s also the release of Logan, which apparently got rave reviews today when the studio screened the first act of the film to a select group of journalists. Fans can also rest easy knowing that Deadpool 2 is finally moving forward now that the Tim Miller controversy is behind them.

We know that David Leitch (co-director of John Wick) will helm the sequel, and it seems that Ryan Reynolds, who plays the title character, couldn’t be more excited that the filmmaker is behind the lens. Check out what he had to say below.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reynolds said that Deadpool 2 is in the development stage, but is “about to move into production.” The follow-up had been rumored to begin production as early as January, but with Miller leaving, it put the sequel in a production stall.

As previously reported, Miller dropped out of directing the sequel due to creative differences with Reynolds and screenwriting duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Miller wanted something bigger and requested for a budget that was three times larger than the original. However, Reynolds wanted something smaller and more reflective of the first film. There were also rumors of disputes between the two during production and well after it. However, Reynolds was quick to dispel such rumors by saying:

“There is not a human being on earth that worked harder on Deadpool than Tim. He’s an incredibly, incredibly talented director.”

Now that they have found a director who can agree with the tone and budget, Reynolds and the screenwriting team can finally move forward with its production. Here’s what the actor had to say about Leitch, his filmmaking style, and his body of work.

“He’s just a guy who’s so muscular with his action. He also really understands those Deadpool sensibilities and where we need to take the franchise from here. And I love John Wick. One of the things that David Leitch does that very few filmmakers can do these days is they can make a movie on an ultra tight minimal budget look like it was shot for 10-15 times what it cost.”

Deadpool didn’t have a big budget to work with, and in the end, that is what worked best for them. By scaling it down, it allowed them to turn their attention away from the big budget action sequences and focus more on the script. It should be interesting to see how Leitch approaches Deadpool’s world. Deadpool 2 has no official start date yet and the studio has yet to announce a release date.
