‘Rogue One’ Star Ben Mendelsohn In Talks To Play Sheriff Of Nottingham In ‘Robin Hood: Origins’

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is out in theaters everywhere this week (read our review here), and in it Ben Mendelsohn plays the villainous Orson Krennic.

Mendelsohn is pretty darn good at taking on the role of a villain, and he continues to capitalize on that talent. It’s being reported that the Australian actor is currently in negotiations to play the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Origins, Lionsgate’s upcoming new take on the classic tale.

If all of details get worked out and ink meets paper, Mendelsohn would join a cast that features Kingsman: The Secret Service star Taron Egerton as the title character, Django Unchained star Jamie Foxx as Little John, Bridge of Spies star Eve Hewson as Maid Marian, and Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan as Robin Hood’s half-brother Will Scarlett.

Not a whole lot is known about the movie at the moment. What we do know is simple and familiar enough. It follows Egerton’s Robin Hood character, described as a “war-hardened crusader,” taking part in a revolt against the corrupt English monarchy.

Robin Hood: Origins will be directed by Otto Bathurst, who makes his feature film directorial debut. Bathurst has directed a few TV movies, but has mostly worked in television directing episodes of shows like Hustle, Black Mirror, Peaky Blinders, and more.

Writing the screenplay is Joby Harold, who previously wrote and directed 2007’s Awake and was a writer and producer on another new twist on an old tale, Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword starring Charlie Hunnam. He was also a producer on Edge of Tomorrow and is producing a planned reboot of I Am Legend.

Leonardo DiCaprio is among the producers through his Appian Way. Also producing is Jennifer Davisson Killoran, Basil Iwanyk, Tory Tunnell, and Harold.

Robin Hood: Origins is currently scheduled for a release on March 23, 2018.
