Peter Jackson’s Movie Prop Collection Part 3: John Chambers’ Makeup Kits (Video)

Mythbusters star Adam Savage and his YouTube channel Tested are back with the third video of their visit to Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit director Peter Jackson‘s unbelievable movie prop collection, which could make any movie fan weep with envy. I know I have. Nine times.

The first part of the series focused on a Hal 9000 faceplate from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. The second part moved on to something near and dear to the King Kong (2005) director’s heart, an armature from the original 1933 King Kong. In the third video found below, we get to see some interesting pieces that aren’t actually movie props but are tied to movies: the makeup kits of John Chambers, who worked on numerous classic titles but was also the man who helped the CIA set up the fake movie production seen in Ben Affleck’s Best Picture winner Argo. John Goodman played Chambers in the movie.

Other less dangerous productions Chambers did makeup work on include the original Planet of the Apes, for which he was awarded an honorary Academy Award—one of only two honorary makeup awards ever handed out, the other going to William J. Tuttle for 7 Faces of Dr. Lao in 1964—(the Best Makeup Oscar wasn’t established until 1981); as well as the original Star Trek TV series, Mission: Impossible, Lost in Space, Halloween II, Blade Runner, and many others.

He also did work on the not so successful 1980 Westworld TV series titled Beyond Westworld. It followed the 1973 original Westworld movie and its 1976 sequel Futureworld, but only lasted five episodes—two of which didn’t even air before it was canceled. Chambers did however grab one of his four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his work, shared with Robert Sidell, who also helped Chambers when he worked with the CIA on the Argo project.

When Adam Savage visited Peter Jackson’s collection of cinema props, costumes, and artifacts, they opened up legendary Hollywood make-up artist John Chambers’ CIA make-up and prosthetics kit. Chambers supposedly used kits like this to help the CIA disguise its agents!
