‘The Emoji Movie’ Trailer: The Not So Subtle ‘Inside Out’ Imitation
  |  @   |

It’s amazing how well thought out Inside Out actually is when you discover that the emotions aren’t as basic as they are. There’s some depth to them. So when it was announced that Sony was coming up with an emoji movie and said that it was a cross between Inside Out and Wreck-It Ralph, there was some relative interest in seeing how it might turn out.

But whatever interest I might have had in the film, died out with this new trailer that lives up to the first character that tries to hype the film that ironically uses the emoji that is in direct opposition of excitement. Basically, it’s just meh. Check out the first trailer for The Emoji Movie (formally titled Emojimovie: Express Yourself) below.

Trying to be funny by being ironic can work, but in this case, the trailer definitely falls flat on its face. It’s not like anyone was asking about the lives of emojis, and yet here we are. The film doesn’t look like it is even trying to get you to watch this. But it is what it is.

Directed by Tony Leondis, The Emoji Movie stars T. J. Miller, Ilana Glazer, James Corden, and Steven Wright.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

EMOJIMOVIE: EXPRESS YOURSELF unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone’s user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become “normal” like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer). Together, they embark on an epic “app-venture” through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever.

The Emoji Movie opens in theaters August 4, 2017.
