If you are bored by the constant stream of sequels and superhero movies, and yearn to see the classics of yesteryear, Fathom Events is there for you. Thanks to the good people at Fathom, 2016 was a great year at the movies for me and my family. I was able to recreate a monumental moment of my childhood, that of my dad taking a 13-year old me to see From Dusk Till Dawn, by taking my 12-year old son Brandon to see the 20th Anniversary showing. We also took in the 20th anniversary of Space Jam, as well as other classics like Planet of the Apes. My wife and I used Fathom Events for date nights, catching several classics throughout the year, like the 40th Anniversary of Taxi Driver and a near Halloween showing of Kubrick’s The Shining.
So what’s on this year’s schedule?
2017 is set to be another great year of classic films. Starting right away, they are bringing Princess Mononoke by legendary director Hayao Miyazaki to theaters on January 5th. In the sad glow of Debbie Reynolds passing, relive her greatness in Singin’ in the Rain January 15th and 18th. Gentlemen, with Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, grab your gals and it’s Swayze-time, as Dirty Dancing celebrates it’s 30th anniversary on January 28th and February 1st.
Joining with Turner Classic Movies for their TCM Big Screen Classic series, Fathom will also be bringing some of the greatest films ever made back to the theater. The Godfather, Casablanca, Some Like it Hot, North by Northwest, E.T., and The Princess Bride are amongst the list, and many are in milestone birthday years. For instance, Casablanca, my personal choice for greatest movie ever made, turns 75 in 2017.
