Hugh Jackman May Be Rethinking Wolverine Retirement
  |  @   |

Hugh Jackman has made it no secret that he intends to put away his adamantium claws for good after Logan, the third installment of the Wolverine X-Men spinoff franchise. The actor has played the character in a total of nine films over the past seventeen years. That’s some major dedication. So while the end is inevitable, there was some hope that he would reconsider, especially since there was a rumor that Deadpool was going to cameo in Logan. Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and Logan director James Mangold were quick to shoot those rumors down, but Reynolds and Jackman have enjoyed throwing social media jabs at each other, that the two sharing the same screen would make for a great movie.

Now new interviews with the actors reveal that there is a very slim chance that it could happen. Check out what Reynolds and Jackman had to say below.

In a piece about Reynolds from Variety, Jackman sees how the movie could work, but a lot of what is preventing it from happening is bad timing.

“I’m hesitating because I could totally see how that’s the perfect fit. But the timing may be wrong.”

The unfortunate thing was that X-Men: Origins – Wolverine never really took off the way that Fox hoped it would. So other spinoff films like Deadpool and the long-gestating Gambit were, and one still is, on the backburner. I’m sure if the film was a bigger success that we would have seen a Deadpool movie a lot sooner and a Wolverine and Deadpool team up film a lot sooner as well.

But now that Deadpool is a huge success, Reynolds sees himself playing the character for as long as he can.

“I would love to play Deadpool for as long as they would let me play Deadpool. We have outlines and stories for a number of different films.”

One of these outlines and stories is for a Deadpool and Wolverine movie. Of course everyone would love to see that happen, but ultimately it is up to Jackman to decide if he is up for another round of playing Logan/Wolverine. But Reynolds believes if anyone can help change his mind, it’s the audience.

“I have no idea if I can change his mind. It’s the audience: I would exclusively exploit that relationship to get Hugh back for another one.”

So if a Wolverine and Deadpool team-up movie were to happen, it would have to be with Jackman. Anyone else wouldn’t feel right. We’ll have to see if Logan can be enough of a success to convince Jackman to stay and play for another film, or two.

Logan opens on March 3, 2017.
