Matthew McConaughey Explains Why He Chose ‘The Dark Tower’ Over ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’

Matthew McConaughey as Walter The Dark Tower

Back in October of 2015 it was reported that Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey had turned down a villain role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The actor turned down that role in an existing franchise to instead star in the first movie in an ambitious upcoming (hopeful) franchise, The Dark Tower.

McConaughey recently had a lengthy chat with Playboy, in which he discussed many different things. At one point turning down Guardians 2 came up, and the actor explained why he made that decision.

Continue reading to see what he had to say.

Here’s McConaughey’s response to why he turned down Guardians 2 for the Dark Tower role:

“I like Guardians of the Galaxy, but what I saw was “It’s successful, and now we’ve got room to make a colorful part for another big-name actor.” I’d feel like an amendment. The Dark Tower script was well written, I like the director and his take on it, and I can be the creator, the author of the Man in Black””a.k.a. the Devil””in my version of this Stephen King novel. We’ve done the first one. It’s a fantastic thriller that takes place in another realm, an alternate universe, but it’s very much grounded. For instance, the gunslinger’s weapon isn’t a lightsaber or something; it’s a pistol. I enjoyed approaching my character as if I were the Devil having a good time, getting turned on by exposing human hypocrisies wherever he finds them.”

The Dark Tower is based on the book series by horror legend Stephen King, and has been in development for many years at various studios. Part of this is due to the project being far bigger than just one movie or even a trilogy of movies. The plan has been to make a trilogy of movies plus a connected TV series. It’s something that has certainly complicated efforts to adapt King’s massive body of work.

Whether or not we’ll actually see multiple movies and a TV series remains to be seen, but for now at least one movie is definitely on the way.

The Dark Tower also stars Idris Elba, and is directed by Nikolaj Arcel. It’s currently scheduled for a July 28, 2017 release.

You can find much more on the movie and its long journey to the big screen right here.
