Deadpool Among WGA Awards Nominees

Specific guild nominations are very telling of what films and television shows are up for major awards. Take SAG (Screen Actors Guild). A lot of the times the nominations from those awards are a precursor to which actors will most likely be nominated for Academy Awards. That is really no different from the Writers Guild of America (WGA).

Today, WGA have announced their Writers Guild Awards nominees for the best in original and adaptive screenplay. You may recognize a few like Arrival or La La Land, heard of their critical acclaim like Moonlight, and may be even surprised by a few like Deadpool. That’s right, Deadpool got a nomination. Check out the list of nominated films below.

Original Screenplay

Hell or High Water, written by Taylor Sheridan

La La Land, written by Damien Chazelle

Loving, written by Jeff Nichols

Manchester by the Sea, written by Kenneth Lonergan

Moonlight, written by Barry Jenkins, story by Tarell McCraney

Adapted Screenplay

Arrival, screenplay by Eric Heisserer, based on the story “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang

Deadpool, written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick, based on the X-Men comic books

Fences, screenplay by August Wilson, based on his play.

Hidden Figures, screenplay by Allison Schroeder and Theodore Melfi, based on the book by Margot Lee Shetterly

Nocturnal Animals, screenplay by Tom Ford, based on the novel “Tony and Susan” by Austin Wright

Documentary Screenplay

Author: The JT LeRoy Story, written by Jeff Feuerzeig

Zero Days, written by Alex Gibney

Command and Control, telescript by Robert Kenner and Eric Schlosser, story by Brian Pearle and Kim Roberts, based on the book “Command and Control” by Eric Schlosser

Of course, the biggest surprise of all is that Deadpool got recognized. While I may not have fallen in love with it as some of you have, it’s nice to see that the WGA can recognize comic book films every once in a while. But that’s the one and only surprise. Everything else is pretty much expected based on word of mouth and the traction they have been getting since their release. Not sure of Deadpool‘s chances against its competitors, but at least Arrival screenwriter Eric Heisserer is excited to be nominated with Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Win or lose, this will probably give Reese and Wernick more ammunition to work with. Giving the Merc with a Mouth more reason to break the fourth wall, or even poke fun at the writers for losing, or worse, question the WGA for giving it the win. We’ll just have to see what happens when the WGA hands out the awards on February 19.

You can find the complete list of nominees, including TV shows and more, over at The Writers Guild Awards website.
