‘Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon’ Sequel Teased For 2017

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

A sequel to the excellent 2006 indie horror flick Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon has been in the works for quite a long time now. The movie is a twist on the slasher sub-genre, following an ambitious up-and-coming slasher who is inspired by legends like Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger, and the film crew he has following him to document what he does.

Unfortunately things simply haven’t worked out in getting it made so far. An attempted Kickstarter campaign back in 2012 only secured a little over $183,000 of the $450,000 goal, which bums me out because I would have totally thrown in whatever I could afford to but never even heard about the crowdfunding campaign until, well…right now.

But now a shiny new year has arrived, and it might just be a good year to make a sequel. The official Facebook page for the sequel, which is currently titled Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon, has dropped the first post since 2015 teasing another attempt at the movie this year. More below.

If that sequel title sounds a little confusing to you, it’s because the movie isn’t just a sequel. The plan is to go all out with the follow-up, making an all-in-one prequel, sequel, and remake. I have no idea what that means, but I don’t need to. If it gets made, I’m in.

Here’s a brief description of the planned sequel, or spreemake, as director Scott Glosserman is calling it:

Before the Mask will pick up where Behind The Mask left off with Vernon disappointed that his fame did not catch on, but ready to get back to work. With Before The Mask, Glosserman seeks to create a spreemake, or a mash-up of a sequel, prequel, and remake, that will deconstruct and comment on the archetypes of prequels, sequels and remakes. The original team of filmmakers and actors, including all-stars Nathan Baesel (Leslie Vernon), Angela Goethals (Taylor Gentry) and Robert Englund (Doc Holleran), are anxious for the second Leslie Vernon installment.

Back in 2009 writer David Stieve talked about the follow-up and what it would be about, including a confirmation that they would again be mixing the cinematic and documentary styles once again. Whether those things are all still part of the movie eight years later is unclear.

What’s also unclear is whether Glosserman has found someone interested in financing Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon, or if he’s ready to give crowdfunding another shot. If it’s the latter, I’ll surely be ready to depart with what I can in hopes of helping it get made.

If you’ve not yet seen the original, you can read our review right here. Then head over to Amazon (or Shudder), grab a copy, and give it a watch. After you’ve done that, you too will be anxious to help get a sequel made if needed.

Below is the Facebook tease mentioned above, along with another post by star Nathan Baesel, and also a trailer for the first movie for those interested.
