A new co-op fantasy RPG from developer PlatinumGames and publisher Microsoft Studios was announced at E3 2014 titled Scalebound. The game was to offer co-op gameplay, with each player getting their own dragon companion to help in battles. This, as you might imagine, had gamers quite excited. Excitement only grew with the release of gameplay videos showing some epic battles you and your dragon would take part in.

But in a surprising turn of events, it has now been announced that Microsoft has decided to cancel the game. It joins other titles canceled by Microsoft such as Fable Legends, Halo Online, and Project Spark.

Not much has been said about the cancellation so far. It was whispered about at first, and then eventually confirmed by Microsoft, who have only released a brief statement thus far:

After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for “Scalebound.” We’re working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including “Halo Wars 2,” “Crackdown 3,” “State of Decay 2,” “Sea of Thieves” and other great experiences.

Microsoft has since been doing all it can to remove the game from memory, even deleting all of the trailers and gameplay footage we had previously seen. Basically acting as if it never existed, eerily. This will no doubt raise more questions about why the decision to cancel was made. Was the game broken, with no easy fixes in sight? Or is there more to the story? It’s unclear how much of the game was completed, but considering Platinum has been working on it for two years now, there must have been a fairly substantial amount of work done.

With the news those who were anxiously awaiting Scalebound‘s arrival can only wonder if this is truly the end—if Microsoft still controls the property and will keep it dead and buried—or if Platinum will be allowed to try to move it to Sony as a PlayStation exclusive, or perhaps even Nintendo for their shiny new Switch console.
