David Goyer, Justin Rhodes To Pen ‘Green Lantern Corps’ Script
  |  @   |

Warner Bros. and DC have been setting up for their superhero standalone films post Justice League by introducing some notable heroes in the ensemble films. But one hero who has been absent is Green Lantern.

We learned that the next Green Lantern film wouldn’t be about one particular Green Lantern but the entire Green Lantern Corps, with the possibility that one of them would make a cameo appearance in Justice League. Whether or not the rumor is true remains to be seen, however, it looks like WB is pushing forward with the film’s development by hiring David Goyer and Justin Rhodes to write the script. More on the story below.

Deadline says in addition to writing, Goyer will also be producing with DC heads Geoff Johns and Jon Berg executive producing. The film is being described as Lethal Weapon in space, and it’s based on a comic book origin story. Hal Jordan and John Stewart will be the two main characters of the film. For those that don’t know, the Green Lantern Corps is an intergalactic police force who protect different sectors of the galaxy.

The former is best known for being a test pilot for Ferris Aircraft, and becoming a member of the Green Lantern Corps after receiving his power ring from a dying alien named Abin Sur, member of the Green Lantern Corps. Ryan Reynolds was the first to play Jordan in the 2011 film Green Lantern, which was critically panned and a box office dud. However, this would be the first time that we see John Stewart on the big screen. The character is probably best known for his appearance in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. According to the report, the story will mainly focus on Jordan and his relationship with the corps.

It’s not clear if the studio will approach Reynolds to reprise his role as Jordan, and I wouldn’t hold my breath on them doing so, considering that the actor is putting a distance between himself and the film. Then, of course, there is the fact that Reynolds is preoccupied with anything that has to do with Deadpool.

Now that they have writers, WB’s next move is to find a director, which moves it that much closer to production.

Goyer’s credits include writing for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, as well as Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Rhodes is not as much of a household name as Goyer, but his credits include Contract Killers, Grassroots, and Unmanned.

Green Lantern Corps is tentatively scheduled for a July 24, 2020, release.
