Last time on This Is Us, the mantra was… “Nothing bad ever happens on Christmas Eve.” It was Christmas time for everyone, and in the past, Kate had to get her appendix taken out on Christmas Eve, while Dr. K may be dying. In the present, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) thought his family night would be a wash as everyone seemed to cancel. He went to his office party and literally talked a friend off a ledge. Then all of his family showed up and it was as lovely as you could expect. Even William’s (Ron Cephas Jones) special friend came – Randall’s kid outed him. Kevin (Justin Hartley) went to Sloane’s (Milana Vayntrub) for Chanukah and it was adorable. Kate (Chrissy Metz) was miserable because she had broken up with Toby (Chris Sullivan), who swooped in and declared he could not live without her in front of his family… then crashed into the table later on with what looked like a heart attack. Okay, that part was not so lovely. It left us hanging as to whether Kate would lose her happiness.

Spoilers below.

This Is Us 1.11 “The Right Thing to Do” review: We open with a young Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) stepping in between his parents’ fight – a domestic abuse situation, determined to be nothing like his father.

The Past: Jack and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) go apartment hunting and they find out they’re having triplets – their doctor chatting with the Dr. K (Gerald McRaney), the one who delivered the babies. They go home and commence freaking out. Rebecca’s mother suggests they all move in with her. Jack is against it. Rebecca sends Jack for ice cream so she can ugly cry about it. He hears and goes to his abusive dad to borrow money, who gave it to him (under the pretense that it was for gambling debts). Jack sold his great car too. He bought the “money pit,” their new home.

The Present: Kevin is awkward about William’s sexuality. “Your bio dad is only half gay.” Oh Kevin. Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) tries to ease Randall’s feelings.

Beth: “Good practice for when Tess and Annie bring boyfriends home.”

Randall: “I hate that sentence.”

Beth: “Or girlfriend.”

Randall: “I prefer that.” Exactly what my husband would say.

Kevin and Sloane pull it off… the play. And then Olivia waltzes in and steals the show back. Will she steal Kevin back too? He ends up rejecting her, but says something dumb about it which Sloane hears. So Kevin ends up with no women.

Toby is recovering and still super funny. Is he becoming my favorite character? I’m so glad he isn’t dead!

Toby: “Climb up here.”

Kate: “Im not mounting you in the hospital.”

Although he is fine now, he needs surgery or medication to fix a problem. He is against surgery, and Kate wants to discuss. When he shuts her down, she leaves, angry. Toby is going bananas. He’s so funny!! And then he professes his love. Her brothers come to sit with her, and she’s freaking out because she did not say it back. The siblings have an adorable moment when she asks her brothers to distract her.

Randall: “Your biological father suddenly turning gay.”

Kate: “Why is that a problem?”

Randall: “I don’t know.”

They seem like real siblings, these “big three.” Toby made it out fine. She confesses her love while he is fake sleeping. And then he nonchalantly proposes. “I’ll marry the hell out of you Kate Pearson.” So sweet! A wedding!

William has a date with Jessie (Denis O’Hare), and Randall tries to get to know him with his signature awkward humor. But Randall is hurting because William is pulling away. He wants to go to a nursing home. Randall won’t let him, because it’s his home. William wants to stop the chemo. So sad, but he respects his wishes.

This episode actually did not make me cry for once (almost though!). Although it had its moments, I think the absence of the siblings as children is the tipping point for me. By no means am I saying this episode was anything less than fantastic. Toby and Kate were the shining stars of the episode, and Randall dealing with his own weirdness was wonderful. It is just a testament to how dear the core younger family is to me. I’m looking forward to the Jack and his father dynamic being explored, and dreading the episode that reveal’s Jack’s passing. I will need cases of Kleenex.

This Is Us airs Tuesday nights at 9:00pm ET on NBC.
