Last season on Colony, we met the Beaumans. Will (Josh Holloway) was former FBI recruited by the new government for his skills, and agreeed to get his missing son back. Katie (Sarah Wayne Callies) was recruited by Broussard (Tory Kittles) to join the Resistance and spy on her husband. As you can imagine, that did not work out too well, or stay secret for more than 2 seconds. Both sides did questionable things – betrayal, murder, theft, chaos – just a perfect little family. Everything was out in the open at the end as Will and Katie took a stand on opposite sides, and Katie ended up alone.

Spoilers ahead.

Colony 2.1 “Eleven.Thirteen” review: It is a picture of family bliss. Huh? The whole family is together, including Charlie. The relationship between the spouses seems great. He’s confiding in his wife – his partner is in trouble. The relationship is strained between him and his oldest son. It is all very confusing, until that is… we see Snyder (Peter Jacobson) that it becomes clear this is a flashback (he’s in textbook publishing), but not until this point (damn you Carlton Cuse!). He is taken by weird recruiters to see something in a giant freezer. That something is human-ish in shape and size and that’s it. The recruiters take him to steal his daughter. He leaves his ex-wife behind.

The GPS is quite wacky which is Apocalypse 101, people.

Will is in the FBI and gets a briefing on missing VIPs. He and his partner (now a strained relationship too) go to one house and have to break in because of something he sees. Dead body alert! They do find the VIP – in his panic room. “What kind of engineer needs a panic room?” He and 1200 are supposed to rebuild society if things go real bad, like apocalypse bad.

Broussard finally comes home to his dying mother. He visits The Yonk and he and Katie greet each other like old acquaintances. He then goes to meet with his special forces buddies, but knows it’s a trap. He gets out and the building is flattened.

What does the end look like? Cars stop working and they all crash, no electricity, no satellite or cell signals. Will tells Katie to get the kids and meet them at the Yonk. She’s only able to get Grace and Bram, but not Charlie (yes, we know). Will goes back out to find him. Her sister shows up, knowing her husband is dead (he was on a plane at the time of the systems crash.

Snyder is brought to the green zone where everything still works.

Broussard tries to revive his mother (life support shut down too).

And the wall comes crashing down, as a stupefied Will watches in horror.

It’s an unspecified time later. Bram is in jail, suffering. Will is dirty and unshaven still looking for Charlie. He goes to Devon’s.

“I need your help.” Wtf?!?!?!? How did they get from this to Season 1, Episode 1? Good play, Cuse.

It is fascinating and long overdue that we get to see what happened on the day the world ended, before they became this split family. It was still a suspicious life – I guess the FBI will do that to you. The strain between Will and Bram came from before this. I really want to know what happened there. Broussard’s life was interesting, but not surprising given what we learned about him. This was a perfect opening to the new season – we only had heard about the “before,” but now we got to live it with them.

Colony airs Thursday nights at 10:00pm ET on USA.
