Last time on Gotham, Jim gave Lee (Ben McKenzie, Morena Baccharin) a really unfair last minute declaration of love, which she did not accept. Mario played with Jim, winning… until his blood test came back positive with the virus. Jim promised Falcone (John Doman) he would not kill Mario, but that promise was broken. Barbara told Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) of Penguin’s (Robin Lord Taylor) murder motive, so he went to her, Butch, and Tabitha (Erin Richards, Drew Powell, Jessica Lucas) to team up against Penguin (after apologizing for the maiming of course). Selina’s mom showed up in time to save her, Bruce and Alfred (David Mazouz, Sean Pertwee) from a sticky and dire situation.

Spoilers below.

Gotham 3.12 “Mad City: Ghosts” review: Jim shows up at Mario’s funeral (far away), but Bullock (Donal Logue) convinces him to leave. Zsasz (Anthony Carrigan) is in his apartment for comic relief.

Penguin is upset that Nygma is not around, but his stats and approval ratings are up, so that cheers him a little. Ms Hearst (Jan Maxwell), a big time tv personality, wants to get inside Penguin’s head. Be careful lady. But she seems even scarier. Right after he says he has nothing to hide, he sees a vision of his dead father (Paul Reubens). Operation destroy Penguin seems to be in full effect. He is haunted that night by the same spectre. A knock at the door has some cops letting him know that someone dug up his dead dad. I really would go stay at a cheery B&B if I was being haunted, instead of a creepy old house. His dad visits again, “Don’t trust him!” Who?

Selina (Camren Bicondova) confronts her mother (Ivana Milicevic). She had to leave because of the law, but she loves her. Selena tells her to leave. She does and tries to drop off something at Wayne Manor. Bruce asks her to wait and let him try to talk to her. It works, but more because he could see she yearned for her mom, as he yearns for his parents. Thanks Camren. You made me cry during a Gotham episode.

Lucius Fox (Chris Chalk) shows gordon and Bullock a case – a girl who was dead 2 days ago that was found walking around town naked, and apparently had thousands of volts of electricity shot through her head.

Bullock: “It’s not a morgue, it’s a motel.” You are correct, sir.

Grief-stricken Lee storms into the police station demanding Jim be arrested, citing that Barnes is still alive. “You’re the virus Jim.” She’s just upset. Falcone tells Lee Gordon will die at his hand.

There’s a Joker sketch on the morgue guy, Pollard’s (David Dastmalchian), bag. He’s running a Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan) worshipping club. Very disturbing (but yay for us! We love Monaghan). After they bust up the party, Victor Zsasz starts shooting at Jim. The hit is on, and they have a big fight in a restaurant kitchen. Jim kills 2 assassins but knocks Victor out.

Lee goes to visit Barnes, who is completely righteous (and cuckoo). I’m just happy to see Michael Chiklis again. Lee runs to Falcone to call it off, and he calls her out on her love for Jim Gordon. It works though. Down Zsasz!

The foursome have a pleasant dinner, and Selena steals Alfred’s wallet to make a point. He calls her a “cheeky monkey” which is just about the cutest thing ever. When mommy finally gets dropped off, she entangles them into all of her problems. Like they don’t have enough going on.

The deputy chief of staff is the set-up. His father’s dead body is in his closet and he kills his chief of staff thinking he put him there. Time for the live interview! He completely loses it of course, and the plotters come out from behind the curtain.

The morgue guy says it’s time… time to resurrect Jerome!

I am so glad it is back. This return brought back the best of Gotham – constant movement of the story, nothing drawn out (except Penguin’s suffering), a glimpse of Jerome, a Barnes scene, a drop of Paul Reubens, all the players playing their parts in their plots and schemes. It was extra dark it seemed, but that could be just perspective since I haven’t watched in a while. Victor Zsasz was quite entertaining this episode. He doesn’t usually get to show that much personality. I’m quite excited for the return of Monaghan. He was so fun.

Gotham airs Monday nights at 8:00pm ET on FOX.
