‘Legion’ Won’t Take Place In The X-Men Film Universe, But Another Show Will

FX's X-Men Spinoff TV Series Legion

Unlike their Marvel Cinematic Universe competitors, Fox’s X-Men film universe is a bit limited. This is due to the fact that they do not have access to any of the Marvel characters other than their own. However, that hasn’t stopped them from expanding it with reboots, spinoffs, and TV series.

Legion, Fox’s first new X-Men series, will premiere in just a couple of weeks. Many have speculated that it will take place some time after the events of the X-Men film universe. With that formula working so well for Disney and Marvel, it only makes sense that Fox try to replicate it. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. In fact, it will not take place in the film universe at all, according to producer Lauren Shuler Donner. A different X-Men TV series, however, will. Find out what Donner had to say about the show and its place within the film universe below.

IGN had a chance to talk Donner about Legion and whether or not it connects to the X-Men films. The producer said that it wouldn’t be like the shared universe we see in the MCU. Here’s what she had to say:

“The cinematic universe will not worry about Legion. They will not worry about these TV worlds at all. They will just continue in the way that they have been continuing, and there is some great stuff that we are developing. I can just say it’s going to be new and different, and yet Legion and our other show, we’re not going to get in each other’s way.”

She added:

“With Legion, we’re our own universe. It gives Noah [Hawley] the freedom to do what he wants to do. Because we play with so many different timelines, and we rebooted and not really rebooted and all that, we felt like, OK, we’re going to throw it out there and hope the fans accept it.”

That is a bit disappointing to some who had hoped it would be a shared universe. Many speculated that the series’ lead Dave (Dan Stevens) could be Professor X’s son, given the psychokinetic powers he has displayed on various trailers and TV spots. However, it doesn’t look like the show is as concerned about that as we would like to think. Instead, they will turn its attention to “who is David?”:

“Probably the driving mystery is, yes, who is David? But not in that sense. It’s more, “˜Is David schizophrenic? Is he crazy? Or does he have powers?’ That is the mystery. “˜Who is David?’ We just don’t want to get into the Xavier world, because that’s not what this show is about.”

But those who are looking for an X-Men show that is connected to the film universe will find comfort in watching the untitled TV series from Burn Notice creator Matt Nix. She also confirms there will be a certain mutant hunting force in the process of talking about the new series:

“Matt’s is much more a part of just the world in terms of there are mutants, mutants are hated and there are Sentinels “” though very different from what we’ve seen before. You feel like you’re here in the X-Men world.”

It should be interesting to see how that show is tied into the film universe. There will be those aching questions that everybody wants answered like when does it take place? Who is the driving force behind building the sentinels? Which mutants will we see?

But the show’s bigger problem will be trying to address when it takes place. Since the X-Men film universe’s timeline is so convoluted, it really doesn’t matter. With the way things look now, Fox doesn’t look like they will be making any deals to share the X-Men with Marvel anytime soon.
