Whether or not you support the 45th President of the United States, politics will always make for good drama on TV. And since today is Donald Trump’s Presidential Inauguration, Netflix could not have picked a better time to release the first teaser trailer for Season 5 of of their hit political drama House of Cards.
Watch the Season 5 announcement teaser trailer here below.
Most would agree that the events of the recent U.S. Presidential election campaign seemed like they could only happen on TV, and yet, shows like House of Cards could not come up with the strange drama that has transpired. So it will be interesting to see if the upcoming season of the series will be a reflection of what has happened in the past year, or if new showrunners Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese have something else in mind. The two take original creator and showrunner Beau Willimon‘s place.
Some new blood is what House of Cards may need, considering that Season 3 was one of the worst and Season 4 was a return to form. But if you are expecting any new footage from this trailer, then you’ll be a bit disappointed. This is a date announcement, so there is no new footage, just the sound of children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to a waving upside down American flag with a backdrop of dark, ominous skies. The symbolism is almost too perfect for both the show and for those who don’t support the newly sworn-in actual U.S. President.
No word yet on what to expect from the upcoming season, but we know that at the very end of Season 4 Frank (Kevin Spacey) and Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) schemed to run President and Vice President as a married couple. We’ll just have to see where it goes from there.
All episodes of Season 5 of House of Cards will launch on Netflix on May 30, 2017.
