Universal Snags Michael Bay Sci-Fi Film About A Trump-Inspired Dystopia
  |  @   |

It’s only been five days since Donald Trump became the President of the United States, and much of the country has already been questioning his executive decisions or protesting. He’s the constant subject of late-night hosts’ jokes. He is also bashed on a weekly basis by Saturday Night Live. Some have even rebelled against his media blackout. No matter what side you’re on, it is safe to say that next four years will be interesting if not great fodder for artists.

A new report supports this, saying that Universal has won the bidding rights for a new Michael Bay-produced film titled Little America that pictures a bankrupt America being owned by the Chinese. More on the story below.

Based on the short plot synopsis that is provided by The Hollywood Reporter, it does bear some similarities to a certain John Carpenter film. Check it out for yourself:

Described by sources as a “sci-fun” story rather than “sci-fi,” the tale is set in a dystopian future where a Donald Trump-like president has bankrupt America and China has called in its debts. The Asian giant now owns America and many Americans have immigrated to China looking for work. In this new world, a former American Force Recon member is hired by a Chinese billionaire to go into an American ghetto and rescue his daughter.

Sources close to the project say the film is in same vein as Carpenter’s Escape From New York. Starring Kurt Russell as a Snake Plissken, the movie centered on a special forces operative who has been given 24 hours to save the President of the United States, who has been kidnapped and taken to the island of Manhattan, which has been turned into a prison.

Rowan Athale (Wasteland) wrote the script to Little America, and is currently attached to direct. Andrew Form and Brad Fuller will produce along with Bay.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Bay and Blumhouse have teamed up for a dystopian-set film. In 2013, they released The Purge, which turned out to be a massive hit at the box office and spawned two equally successful sequels. In the trilogy, America, which is now run by rich corporate tycoons, legalizes crime for a 12 hour period in a nation-wide event called The Purge.

It’s not everyday you hear me say that I am genuinely interested in a Michael Bay film, and yet, Little America has my full attention. It should be fun to see how this film develops.
