James Cameron Doesn’t Like What’s Happen With The ‘Alien’ Franchise
  |  @   |

James Cameron took Ridley Scott‘s place as the director of the Alien sequel, Aliens. The follow-up stepped away from the sci-fi horror, and was warped into an action thriller. The series stuck with that genre for the next two sequels before reverting back to where it started with the tepid prequel, Prometheus. The franchise will try to reestablish its sci-fi horror credibility with Alien: Covenant – check out the trailer here below. While some may be excited for what’s to come, there’s one director who isn’t.

Cameron isn’t too happy with the current state of the Alien franchise and believes that the series should not have carried on after his film. But he still believes there is a chance the franchise can be saved. Check out what he said here below.

In an interview with Vulture, Cameron explains why the Alien franchise hasn’t been as successful as it should be since the release of his sequel.

“The franchise has kind of wandered all over the map. Ridley [Scott] did the first film, and he inspired an entire generation of filmmakers and science-fiction fans with that one movie and there have been so many films that stylistically have derived from it, including my own Aliens, which was the legitimate sequel and, I think, the proper heir to his film. I sort of did it as a fanboy. I wanted to honor his film, but also say what I needed to say. After that, I don’t take any responsibility.”

While Cameron is critical about the current state of the franchise, he is hopeful that Alien: Covenant can turn things around.

“I don’t think it’s worked out terribly well. I think we’ve moved on beyond it. It’s like, okay, we’ve got it, we’ve got the whole Freudian biomechanoid meme. I’ve seen it in 100 horror films since. I think both of those films stand at a certain point in time, as a reference point. But is there any validity to doing another one now? I don’t know. Maybe. Let’s see, jury’s out. Let’s see what Ridley comes up with. Let me just add to that “” and don’t cut this part off, please “” I will stand in line for any Ridley Scott movie, even a not-so-great one, because he is such an artist, he’s such a filmmaker. I always learn from him. And what he does with going back to his own franchise would be fascinating.”

At least he doesn’t throw Scott under the bus, even when the filmmaker was behind a film like Prometheus.

Alien: Covenant opens in theaters on May 19, 2017.

  1. Prometheus was an exceptional film. The hate for the movie was crazy. People just wanted another sci-fi horror experience and were unhappy when they got a very thoughtful artistic creation.
