It’s very typical to see more details to major developments like Ben Affleck taking himself out as the director of The Batman (rumored title). The film suffered a major setback this week, which now forces Warner Bros. to look for another director. This is the fourth time they have to do so in the past two years. The first was for Wonder Woman, while The Flash lost two directors in one year, and this year Affleck took his name out. But for all of its problems, WB remains adamant that they can make the DC Extended Universe just as entertaining as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Still, one has to wonder what happened to make Affleck walk away from directing a superhero film. We will probably hear more about it in the coming weeks or maybe later, but now comes word that Chris Terrio had his hands on the script to The Batman. More on the story below.

Deadline says Terrio was working on a draft shortly before Affleck quit as director. Terrio has been a writing partner of sorts to Affleck since his Argo days. In fact, he was brought in to polish the script for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and eventually became the writer for the Justice League movie. However, Terrio writing a draft for The Batman is new. As far as we knew, Affleck was writing the script with DCEU co-head Geoff Johns. However, reports of Terrio taking a pass at it, but still unable to crack it, is a bit concerning.

Affleck said he wouldn’t direct unless he got the script right, and him asking Terrio for help should not come as a huge surprise. But with the report that he was unable to put it together only supports Bret Easton Ellis’ previous comments – comments that he backed away from – that the film’s script was in disarray and the studio wasn’t going to do anything about it.

The actor has been strong about directing only if the script was up to his expectations. In fact, that’s why he’s been so cautious about confirming that he would direct. But maybe he is on to something. After all, he directed Gone Baby Gone, The Town, Argo, and most recently Live By Night – the worst of the four based on critics’ reviews. So of course, he isn’t going to get behind the lens of a movie with a sub-par script.
