Sure, Ghost in the Shell may be wrapped up in a whitewashing controversy, but Rupert Sanders‘ adaptation of the popular manga and anime starring Scarlett Johansson does look good visually. The film takes place in a highly technological futuristic setting, with a special-operations task-force made up of former military officers and police detectives assembled to act as a counter-terrorism force against corrupt officials, companies, and cyber-criminals.
Now Paramount has released the new TV spot that will appear during the Super Bowl this Sunday. Check it out below.
The 30-second Super Bowl spot features all new footage never before seen in the trailers. While the film does look good from a visual standpoint, it’ll be hard to determine if it can hold together narratively. We’ve all seen films with a case of style over substance. Sanders’ first directorial debut, Snow White and the Huntsman, was exactly that. Though, he does have plenty source material to look back on here.
The film also stars Pilou Asbæk, Takeshi Kitano, Michael Pitt, and Juliette Binoche.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic¹s advancements in cyber technology.
Ghost in the Shell opens on March 31, 2017.
The Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots will face off at Super Bowl LI at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, at 6:30 pm ET on Sunday, February 5, 2017. The Big Game will be broadcast on FOX TV, with FOX Sports GO streaming it online.
