The last four movies that Kevin Smith has worked on as a director—Red State, Tusk, Holidays, and most recently Yoga Hosers—have all been horror movies or have had horror elements. Much different from the comedies and dramedies set in the “View Askewniverse” he’s best known for, such as Clerks, Mallrats, and Dogma. He’s also been involved in a couple of TV shows on The CW recently, directing a couple of episodes of both The Flash and Supergirl.
There’s been talk here and there of returning to his Askewniverse again for Clerks III, a world he hasn’t visited since 2006’s Clerks II. But now Smith has revealed that Clerks III is dead and he’s turned his attention to the most familiar part of the Askewniverse, Jay and Silent Bob, who he’s written a new movie for. Find out what it’s about below.
Smith revealed that one of his four leads for Clerks III has opted out, so, at least for the moment, that project is dead. I wouldn’t be shocked if it resurfaced someday down the line, but we can only wait and see on that.
As for Jay and Silent Bob, only one of Smith’s Askewniverse movies was directly about the duo: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The rest they were just a part of, showing up from time to time for a crude joke from Jay or some wise words from the mostly silent Bob.
Smith is looking to change that now, having written the script for a movie titled Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. In it Jay and Bob discover that Hollywood has decided to reboot the Bluntman & Chronic movie, so they head west again to stop it from happening. Smith describes it as “a tongue-in-cheek, silly-ass satire that pokes fun at the movie business’s recent re-do obsession, featuring an all-star cast of cameos and familiar faces.”
Smith says that old friend Miramax is interested in the project, and if all goes well he could even be filming it by sometime this summer.
The director also has the third movie in his True North Trilogy following Tusk and Yoga Hosers, titled Moose Jaws, though it’s not clear where things stand on that movie yet.

You know it was that bastard Jeff Anderson who ruined our chances at Clerks 3, don’t you?

Yeah, any idea what his problem is? I heard he had to fight to get paid for Clerks 2 or something but I don’t know if that’s true or not.
