Matt Reeves Officially In Talks To Direct ‘The Batman’
  |  @   |

Shortly after Ben Affleck dropped out as director of The Batman, War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves became one of the frontrunners to direct the film. Now a new report confirms Reeves that is in talks to direct the film. We are also learning who else was in the running to direct. Check out the full story below.

Borys Kit of THR confirms that Reeves has entered negotiations to direct The Batman. Now, this is far from a confirmation, but it does put him one step closer to getting the job. But sources say that talks started as early as Friday.

Affleck was less than willing to commit to direct unless he could get the script right. In a statement, the actor spoke about how he would work with the studio “to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film.”

Considering that Reeves is far from inking a deal, Warner Bros. is also considering Alien: Covenant‘s Ridley Scott and Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez.

Whomever ends up getting the gig, he will most likely have to work with a brand new script. Recently, Affleck and Geoff Johns script, with rewrites from Chris Terrio, underwent a massive overhaul. Affleck would obviously reprise his Batman v Superman role as the Dark Knight, while Joe Manganiello is signed on to play Deathstroke. It’s still not clear though if the film will feature a number of the Bat’s greatest villains. The film is also rumored to take place at Arkham Asylum, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Given that Reeves was behind the highly successful Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and the highly anticipated War for the Planet of the Apes, it is easy to see why WB is in talks with him. He’s an excellent storyteller and can carry out his vision and turn it into a blockbuster success.

Now Scott has turned down offers to direct superhero movies before, and has criticized their “non-reality.” Still, Batman is probably one of the most grounded superheroes of the bunch. So maybe he just needs some convincing. Alvarez is coming off Don’t Breathe, a relatively quiet success. Captain Fantastic‘s Matt Ross is also in the running, but it’s not clear if he has entered talks.

We’ll keep you up to date on who ends up directing the film.
