WB and Ben Affleck Reportedly Happy With New ‘The Batman’ Script
  |  @   |

There’s going to be a day where the sun will always shine on the DCEU. But today is not that day. The Batman is the latest film to be plagued by production problems. It was hit early on with a rumor from Bret Easton Ellis – which he backtracked later on – that WB did not like the script. Then Ben Affleck dropped out as director, after spending weeks seesawing his commitment. But now it has circled back to script issues. Affleck and Geoff Johns had worked on a script before it was handed off to Chris Terrio (Argo). Last week’s news that the studio would like to start the film with a fresh script was worrisome.

Now, Justin Kroll of Variety is offering a different perspective. According to him, WB thinks the script is fine. More on the story below.

There isn’t what you would call an article on the story. Rather, Kroll was responding to a Batman fan-based Twitter account asking about the recent news.

For those who don’t know, Kroll is talking about Toby Emmerich, WB’s President and Chief Content Officer. While the tweet mentions that a new script came in, it also says everyone at WB is happy with what they’ve read. Of course, we don’t know how much that script has changed since it transferred from Affleck and Johns to Terrio, or if they even got a new writer to polish it. But the recent news only supported the rumor that the film could feature a number of Batman villains like The Joker.

But if they are happy with the script, why don’t they announce a release date? This would establish that they have full confidence in The Batman. Plus, this might entice Affleck to return to direct. After all, he said he would direct, but only if the script was up to his expectations. Even if he does feel a bit exhausted from working on so many WB projects, you’d think that Affleck can use his pull to reel in one director. Not that Matt Reeves is a bad choice – he’s great. But if they want to get this movie going, they better pull the trigger soon.

Again, this isn’t the first DCEU film to be hit with problems. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice also had to go through rewrites, Wonder Woman lost one director, while The Flash lost two (in one year no less). Whatever the outcome may be for The Batman, let’s hope that WB can find someone who is willing to commit to see through the project until the very end. Because right now, it doesn’t look good for the studio.
