It was always a bit strange that no one had made a movie about the fascinating and sometimes heartbreaking life of wrestling legend and The Princess Bride star Andre the Giant.
In May of last year, we found out that this might change with word that a movie was finally being developed. The biggest challenge with that project, of course, is finding someone to actually play the giant.
Now comes word of another Andre project that’s on the way and doesn’t have to worry about casting someone to play the larger than life figure. It’s been announced that the WWE, HBO Sports, and Bill Simmons are teaming up to make a documentary simply titled Andre the Giant.
Producer and director Jason Hehir (30 for 30, Jose Canseco: Last Shot, Finding Hulk Hogan, UFC Primetime) is set to direct the documentary.
Of the news, Simmons said:
“Going back to 2007 and 2008 when I was creating and developing “˜30 for 30′ for ESPN, Andre’s story rode the top of every single sports documentary wish list I ever made. We always hear about unicorns these days – Andre was the ultimate unicorn. He’s a true legend. Everyone who ever crossed paths with him has an Andre story – and usually four or five. I’m delighted to join forces with Jason Hehir and WWE so we can capture Andre’s amazing story once and for all.”
WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon released a statement, saying:
“For more than 20 years, Andre the Giant’s larger than life personality and unique charisma captured the imagination of fans around the world. I will always value our friendship, and am proud to tell the story of the “˜Eighth Wonder of the World’.”
No word yet on when we might see the documentary premiere on HBO.
