Will Harry Potter’s David Thewlis Play Ares In ‘Wonder Woman’?

David Thewlis to join Wonder Woman

While Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) has been performing her heroic duties in most of the marketing campaign for her upcoming solo film Wonder Woman, there has been no sign of a villain yet. TV spots and trailers seem to indicate that there wouldn’t be a super-powered villain, and the film would just be a battle over the Mother Box McGuffin. However, there is a new rumor that says David Thewlis (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) will be playing the role of Ares, the Greek god of war. More on the story below.

According to Batman-News’ sources, Ares will be a mix of CGI and practical effects. He is searching for a deadly gas that has the potential to destroy humanity. Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), who is in possession of a formula, crash lands on Paradise Island and is then saved by Wonder Woman.

Trailers have lead us to believe that Danny Huston would be the major villain of the film. If that is the case, it could be one of two things: either Huston’s character is working with Ares to wipe out humanity or Ares has taken a human form. Of course, I could be wrong on both accounts. We probably can expect to see a tease of Ares in the next trailer. Or at least a confirmation of who the villain is.

At this point, the casting is unconfirmed, but Batman-News does have a pretty decent reputation for getting these things right.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

“˜Wonder Woman’ hits movie theaters around the world next summer when Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action adventure from director Patty Jenkins. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers”¦and her true destiny.

Warner Bros. will release Wonder Woman into theaters on June 2, 2017.
