Last week on The Vampire Diaries, Stefan (Paul Wesley) drove panicked as a human, unable to handle all that he has done. He got thrown in jail and Caroline (Candice King) came to his rescue. Cade (Wolé Parks) told Damon (Ian Somerhalder) that they were free, but Stefan would die at midnight unless he retrieved the Maxwell journal. The journal held the secret to killing Cade (we saw that in a Matt/Ethan Maxwell flashback (Zach Roerig). Damon stole it and sealed the deal. He told Alaric (Matthew Davis) he had an idea on how to kill the devil. Kai (Chris Wood) walked in. Bonnie (Kat Graham) wanted to grab Enzo (Michael Malarkey) from the other side, but her mother stopped her.

Spoilers below.

The Vampire Diaries 8.13 “The Lies Will Catch Up to You” review: It starts 3 days prior to Kai showing up, revisiting the scene where Matt rings the bell. Kai comes forth. He is so happy, but realizes he can’t taste or feel anything. He’s “stuck between dimensions,” as he tells it to Alaric and Damon. He said he will help kill Cade and bring back Elena (Nina Dobrev).

Caroline calls Bonnie who is not answering, but meditating with stones and candles. Matt goes to Caroline with the new problem of the day. Everyone Stefan ever compelled is remembering his misdeeds now that he is human. Caroline is trying to clean the mess in a positive way. Rick needs to talk to her about the children and their new magic.

Meanwhile, Stefan is having some bigger trouble of his own. Dorian kidnapped Stefan at gunpoint because he now remembers that Stefan killed his family, and hid it with a fire. He tells him to dig his own grave and shoots him. He soon regrets it and tries to save him, calling Matt who is on the way. Caroline is much faster.

Damon tries to fish for info from Bonnie, while not telling her that Kai is back. But she’s psychic now. Bonnie holds hands with Cade to contact Enzo. And she does. He warns her not to trust Cade. That’s what the power that emanated from her was – she sent Enzo to a private safe dimension. And Cade wants him back. Later, she calls to Enzo, and he appears with a kiss.

Kai is deteriorating, so they better figure it out quick.

Stefan is dying and he and Cade have a talk. Stefan wants to live, so he does. That was easy.

Damon to Kai: “If you want my forgiveness, you’re gonna bring Elena Gilbert back to life right now.” Ummm… no. Kai siphons power from Damon and disappears. Do we think he’s gonna go after the twins? It looks like those little ones can hold their own.

Alaric brings the girls over to Caroline’s and tells her they started acting out 3 days ago. Lots of stuff happened 3 days ago.

Good episode as usual. Kai and Damon in a buddy movie is always a ton of fun. Chris Wood is just great in everything (recently watched his Supergirl episodes – LOVED). It feels like Stefan is getting off easy for the hundreds of years of pain and suffering he caused. However, there is still time for his atonement.

Three more episodes! Of course, I do not know how they will pull off a series finale this quick. Having Dobrev come back will help, but what of everyone else? Will vampirism be completely cured? Will they all get their happily ever after? Any other old faces coming back?

The Vampire Diaries airs Friday nights at 8:00pm ET on The CW.
