The 89th Annual Academy Awards ceremony was broadcasted live on ABC on Sunday night, February 26, 2017, from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, CA, with Jimmy Kimmel as the host.
Check out the list of all the winners from Oscars 2017.
Below are a several highlights from this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, some of which have accompanying videos.
The broadcast saw lots of digs at Trump and even more digs at Matt Damon, and while La La Land brought home the most awards, it didn’t bring home the big one… but it almost did!
Hamilton – Moana Mash-Up
Lin-Manuel Miranda and his mom walked the Red Carpet wearing ACLU ribbons. The E! Red Carpet gang showed Miranda a video of the Hamilton Broadway cast singing one of the songs he wrote for Disney’s animated feature Moana to wish his good luck.
Jimmy Kimmel gave a great opening monologue where he got everyone to give a standing ovation to “overrated” actress Meryl Streep; he attempted to extend an olive branch to Matt Damon; and got a few good digs at President Trump.

Mahershala Ali, who most of us know best as the villainous Cottonmouth from the hit Netflix Marvel series Luke Cage, won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight, making him the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar.

Katherine Johnson, one of the African-American women who worked at NASA in the 1960s who went on to become the subject of the Academy Award-nominated film Hidden Figures, made an appearance at this year’s Oscars ceremony and received a much-deserved standing ovation.
With music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, “How Far I’ll Go” was sung beautifully by Moana star, teenaged Auli’i Cravalho, with a rap intro by Miranda. Another musical hit performance at this year’s Oscars.
The Oscars ceremony is a lengthy non-dinner event, so when food shows up, the attendees are grateful. This year, packages of Junior Mints and Red Vines were parachuted down into the theater. Check out the video, where you can see ever-the-hero Andrew Garfield making sure no one got hit by falling items.

Later on in the broadcast, Kimmel lifted up little Lion star Sunny Pawar like Simba to trigger more raining down of candy – this time, Lemonheads and Mike & Ike’s.
Iran Film “The Salesman” Wins Best Foreign Language Film
The Salesman won Best Foreign Language Film, but its director Asghar Farhadi was not in attendance at the ceremony to accept. Thanks to the current Muslim ban in the U.S., Farhadi decided not to attend in solidarity with the people of the seven nations currently affected by the ban. In his stead, the director had two Iranian-American NASA scientists “” Firouz Naderi, director of Solar Systems Exploration and engineer Anousheh Ansari, who accept the award and read a statement.
A tour bus load of people, thinking they were coming to see a special costume exhibit, were brought into the theater for the surprise of their lives – the live Oscars ceremony. They got to meet the celebrities in the front row, with one couple getting “married” by Denzel Washington.
Michael J. Fox and Seth Rogen arrived on stage in a Back to the Future DeLorean, with Rogen donning the futuristic Reeboks and singing a little bit of Hamilton, to fulfill some Bucket List items.
In previous years, Donald Trump would tweet about the Academy Awards ceremony, typically trashing it. This year, the now-U.S. President has been quiet (he’s attending a Governors dinner at the White House), so host Jimmy Kimmel tweeted at him during the broadcast.
As always, the In Memoriam is a tear-jerker, and this year is no difference, since we lost so many talented people in 2016. Jennifer Aniston introduced this segment, making mention to actor Bill Paxton, who died yesterday at age 61.
I think the only person who got roasted more than Donald Trump was Jimmy Kimmel’s nemesis Matt Damon. When Damon took the stage with buddy Ben Affleck to present the award for Best Original Screenplay, Kimmel conducted the orchestra to play him off — even though he was a presenter!
“La La Land” Wins… No “Moonlight” Wins Best Picture
I don’t know if this is a “highlight” as much as a wake-up, because after nearly four hours, this broadcast was getting tiresome. But, a major shock came at the end!
Just before the Best Picture award was presented, Emma Stone won Best Actress for La La Land, which brought that film’s award count up to 6 wins. Then Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway presented Best Picture, with Dunaway announcing La La Land as the winner. And after the La La Land crew went up to the stage to accept the award, it turns out the real winner was actually Moonlight!!!! “La La Land” was said because the card they were given said “Emma Stone – La La Land.” So there was some kind of crazy mix up, but holy shit!!!
