‘Beauty and The Beast’s LeFou Will Be Disney’s First Gay Character
  |  @   |

Disney’s upcoming adaptation of Beauty and the Beast will bear some similarities to its animated counterpart, but there will also be some things that make it unique as well.

Of course, we were going to get some new songs. But some characters will go through some changes as well. LeFou (Josh Gad) has been confirmed to be the first Disney character who is gay. More on the story below.

The news comes to us from an interview between director Bill Condon and Attitude. During the interview, he revealed that LeFou has some feeling for Gaston (Luke Evans), and is just now realizing that it is something more than just a friendship:

“LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston. He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that’s what has its payoff at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”

Let’s not see this as some sort of publicity stunt. This is a huge step in the right direction, especially for the LGBTQ community, who have been, for the most part, underrepresented in major blockbuster films. This isn’t completely surprising coming from Disney considering that the Oscar-winning Zootopia had themes of welcoming diversity and accepting inclusion.

Now it should be interesting to see what Condon meant by “payoff.” While the animated character wasn’t gay, his obsession and constant praise to Gaston could give off the impression that he has feelings for him. So this live-action version seems like it will have LeFou be honest with his feelings towards Gaston. Of course, that doesn’t mean that Gaston will reciprocate that. Or maybe he does, and that is the payoff that Condon is talking about.

I guess we’ll just have to find out when the film comes out.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a live-action re-telling of the studio’s animated classic which refashions the classic characters from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs. “Beauty and the Beast” is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within.

Beauty and the Beast will be released in theaters on March 17, 2017.
