Warning – SPOILERS for AMC’s The Walking Dead…

Last week’s The Walking Dead backtracked to show us what happened after Eugene’s capture from Alexandria by Negan. The Saviors brought the cowardly man back to the Sanctuary, and instead of throwing him into a cell, they gave some very accommodating living quarters. There, Eugene learns that Negan has grand plans for his big brains, as do Negan’s plotting wives. He learns firsthand what happens when someone isn’t loyal to Negan. In the end, he comes to appreciate his newfound standing at the Sanctuary, and when asked by Negan who he is, Eugene quickly replies correctly, “I am Negan,” solidifying his place at the Sanctuary.

This week’s episode, 7.12 “Say Yes,” follows Rick and Michonne out on the road looking for guns to bring back to the Heapsters, who had promised to help Rick fight the Saviors if he supplied them with the weapons. We see the couple finding few supplies and then making love, showing that even during these desperate times, they are enjoying their time alone together. They eventually come upon two Saviors playing golf in the road, and manage to steal some of their provisions before driving away undetected.

Later, after following a deer, they come upon an abandoned carnival, outside of which they find bullet casings on the ground, indicating that something “big” had happened there. They climb up to the roof of one of the buildings to survey the area, and they see the place is crawling with walkers who are still wearing their guns. This is definitely promising. But can they get the guns? “Yes, we can,” Michonne says after using her rifle to shoot at the carnival shooting game. As they smile with relief, the duo fall through the roof. Thankfully, they are fine.

Meanwhile, back at Alexandria, a bitter Rosita doesn’t want to just wait around. Tara tries to tell her that everything will be all right, but Rosita wants to go out and look for guns, so that’s exactly what she does. She comes upon a place and sees a gun, then fights a walker to get to it only to discover it’s just a toy. She heads back to Alexandria empty-handed and frustrated. She visits Father Gabriel at the church complaining that she didn’t find a single gun out there. She goes off on him for previously trying to prevent her from killing Negan when she had the chance. If she had killed him, they wouldn’t be in their current predicament and others like Olivia and Spencer would still be alive, and Eugene would still be in Alexandria. (Little does Rosita know, Eugene is living it up like royalty at the Sanctuary.) Father Gabriel says he will “take the blame” for her still being alive, which was a selfish desire of his because the community needs her to be there. “You don’t know shit about shit,” she tells the holy man. “You’re right, I don’t,” he replies. He says they had needed her, and that they still do. “Anything is possible until your heart stops beating,” he tells her.

Back at the carnival, Rick and Michonne find a room of RTE (“Ready to eat”) military rations. That night, they have a romantic candlelight dinner with their newly found food, including some chili mac and cheese, as they plan how to overtake the walkers for their guns the following day. Once again, Rick suggests they stay away a few more days, but Michonne thinks they need to get back home. She says that once they get the guns and have the Heapsters help them defeat Negan, what will they do then? The world will need to be reordered, and she thinks Rick should be the person to lead that new world. He says it’s not really what he wants; rather, he’d be happy to reorder the world along with her. She’d be happy with that, too.

As Michonne sleeps, Rick sits up in bed with his head in his hands. He clearly still feels some weight on his shoulders, hence why he wants to stay a few more days in their “romantic getaway” away from their realities and responsibilities.

Back at Alexandria, Tara is watching Rick’s daughter Judith, who is a toddler now. Tara is looking at the necklace that Cyndie from Oceanside gave to her, and hands it to Judith. Tara is struggling over whether to tell Rick about Oceanside, the secret all-female community who lost all their men at the hands of the Saviors. She knows that Rick will want to take their guns and get them to join his fight against the Saviors, but that the women won’t want to and instead will fight the Alexandrians. “What makes our life worth more than theirs?” Tara asks Judith, before answering that the Alexandrians want to fight the ones – the Saviors “” who are hurting other people. As she talks it out, she knows what she has to do.

But first, Rick has to make it home from the carnival. The next morning, Rick and Michonne decide to head out to the carnival area and pick off the walkers by hand one-by-one. At one point, Rick decides to use a nearby car to ram into the Walkers, but when the brakes fail, the couple finds themselves trapped in the car surrounded by Walkers. Had this been Season 1 or 2, it would mean the end of these two major characters; but in Season 7, getting out of this predicament is a piece of cake for these warriors. Once free, they continue to slaughter the walkers one by one. Then Rick sees the deer from earlier, so he climbs up the ferris wheel to shoot it. But then that falls in and he’s once again surrounded. Michonne sees this happen and runs to his aid, but finds instead a group of walkers feasting. She’s devastated and drops her sword, unable to fight because of her shock. But just then, Rick jumps out of a nearby box “” it’s the poor deer that was walker food “” and he tosses Michonne her sword and then continues to clear the place of the undead. “I tried, but I still owe you one,” Rick tells her, referring the deer she caught that he gave to Negan.

Rick and Michonne collect all the guns, and thankfully, there’s a good amount of them. On their way back in the van, Michonne is still despondent, so Rick pulls over. He says again that he would have liked to take a few more days out on the road and that he hasn’t been sleeping. It’s clear that he does not want the honeymoon to end. He mentions losing Glenn, the person who right in the beginning saved him, but yet he couldn’t do the same for him. He knows that having these feelings is normal, and that getting away like they did doesn’t “cure it.” She cries that she can’t lose him, but Rick goes on to say that they are going to fight the Saviors and that they will lose people, and they might even lose each other and it will be worth it, because it’s not about them anymore. It’s about the future of this world, it’s about giving Judith and Maggie and Glenn’s baby a future. He says that if he doesn’t make it, she will need to lead their people.

Next we see Rick, Michonne, Tara, and Rosita back at the Heapsters to bring them the guns they found. There are 63 guns in seemingly working condition, but Jadis says they still need twice as many if they are going to fight the Saviors. Rick then barters with the leader again, walking away with 20 of the guns and keeping the metal cat he took when he was last there. They then reaffirm their pact to fight together. Rosita, of course, is frustrated that the fight is being postponed again. Michonne, though, is optimistic like Rick and tells her love that he can have the few days that he wanted.

Next, everyone is back home at Alexandria. Rick comes by to see Tara, who was actually on her way to see him. He’s looking for Rosita, who never showed that morning for her guard shift. But why was Tara coming to see Rick? “I have something to tell you,” she says. Yep, she’s going to tell him about Oceanside!

But where is Rosita? She shows up at the Hilltop to get help from Sasha. She is tired of waiting for Rick to collect guns and start the fight. She wants to kill Negan now. She’s memorized everything about the Sanctuary, and as it turns out, Sasha has seen a map of what the outside of the place looks like. Sasha agrees to go with Rosita to kill Negan on one condition: She gets to make the kill shot. Rosita agrees. “They can’t catch us alive,” Sasha says. The women know that this is a suicide mission for both of them and they are fine with that.
