Last time on The Vampire Diaries, Kai (Chris Wood) gave Cade (Wolé Parks) Elena’s coffin, but kept the dagger for himself. Cade wanted Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to fetch it for him. The brothers knocked Kai out and took him to the Armory. He taunted Caroline (Candice King) saying he knew what would help the twins. He siphoned magic from the walls, and stalked the little girls. Alaric (Matthew Davis) and Caroline saved them. Stefan tricked Damon and went to kill Cade himself, but that didn’t work (even with a bell plan). Cade made Damon choose between saving Stefan or Elena, but instead Damon sacrificed himself. Just as Cade was readying to send dead Damon to hell, Bonnie (Kat Graham) showed up and fought for his soul. That struggle only stopped once Stefan came back and killed him. Bonnie locked Kai up in a lonely world with an annoying song on loop. He revealed that Katherine was now the queen of hell.

Spoilers below.

The Vampire Diaries 8.15 “We’re Planning a June Wedding” review: Matt’s dad (Joel Gretsch) came back to Mystic Falls… with his mom, Kelly (Melinda Clarke). She misses her family. The real deal is that she came back from hell, complete with requisite bloody coughing.

Dorian (Demetrius Bridges) says they have to fashion a weapon of Katherine’s bones. Everyone gets a job – the most important is to lure Katherine out of hiding. One spontaneous wedding coming up!

Damon wants Stefan to know that he didn’t kill Enzo, “Evil, nasty, ripper Stefan did it.” They get Katherine’s bones, and then it’s time for a bachelor party in a crypt! Stefan is a lightweight, so Damon drags Caroline to drink too, toasting to his best friend, Liz Forbes. He gives her “something borrowed” – Elena’s necklace.

Bonnie doesn’t want to go the wedding. When Enzo (Michael Malarkey) visits, he tries to convince her to go, and they have a romantic moment. Bonnie ends up showing up. I knew she would! Katherine texts, “Game on,” to Kelly Donovan.

Matt’s mom grills his dad about the dagger. When he comes up empty, she slices his throat. Ouch!

Stefan tells Damon he hopes to see his wedding to Elena. “Hopefully your hero hair hasn’t fallen out by then,” remarks Damon. Good one.

Caroline slowly walks down the aisle to Stefan – so happy. When she faces Stefan, he recognizes Katherine’s “something old” necklace. Damon starts the ceremony, and even though he stalled during the objection part… no one did. So they keep going.

“You may kiss the bride, little brother.” The reception is lovely except for one teensy flaw – Kelly causes a gas leak, just as the twins and Bonnie go to the bathroom. Matt finds his father – not dead (that was a shock to me). His mom gives the requisite drunken relative speech, albeit slightly more homicidal.

In the midst of the fire, Enzo appears. She doesn’t want to stop seeing him. “Live your life Bonnie Bennett. All of it. Promise me.” I love you, Enzo! So she showed the girls how to put out the fire through magic, and they were saved. But Enzo was truly gone. Kelly told Matt and Damon the real trick. The explosion was just a distraction. Vicki Donovan is back from hell and would ring the bell. At the first gong, Kelly dies and it looks like Bonnie dies too? Could that be the coffin in the teasers? That would put to bed some things- Elena’s resurrection and Bonnie and Enzo could finally be together forever.

This episode mixed beauty and future with death and finality. TVD is looking to end the same way it began and always has been – with near death misses and constant action. It’s why I’ve been hooked all these years.

Just tell me this – what is Ian Somelhalder’s next project? I must watch.

The season finale of The Vampire Diaries airs Friday night at 8:00pm ET on The CW.
