A clash between two comic book movies wasn’t a matter of if but when. Now that Avatar 2 has been pushed back, studios have set their eyes on the winter holiday release.
And for Sony and Warner Bros. they have decided to mark their calendars to release their respective films — the untitled animated Spider-Man movie and Aquaman — on December 21, 2018. That means, we are getting our first Marvel vs DC showdown at the theaters. More on the story below.
THR, with a few tweets from Borys Kit, was the first to report on Aquaman‘s push from October 5, 2018 to December 21, 2018. The December date was previously held by Avatar 2. But when Cameron announced that the sequel would be unlikely to be released by then, studios saw it as an opportunity to take it. Remember, the first Avatar was released around that time and went on to be one of the highest grossing films ever. That goes double for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. What makes this interesting is that Sony followed suit, by also scheduling their untitled animated Spider-Man movie to be released on the same day.
Here are Kit’s tweets:
AQUAMAN release date news: the DC movie pushed back 2 months, moves from Oct 5, 2018 to Dec 21, 2018.
So far, Aquaman is one of the few films that has been met with the least amount of behind the scenes controversy. The Batman recently got a new director and will go through a script overhaul. The Flash lost two of its directors in one year, and has yet to name a replacement. And Suicide Squad 2‘s newly hired scribe doesn’t inspire much confidence. Still, with James Wan on board as director, there is a lot to look forward to, and hopefully things will turn around for WB.
Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as the title character; Amber Heard as Mera, Aquaman’s royal love interest; with Willem Dafoe playing Dr. Vulko, Aquaman’s most trusted advisor; and Patrick Wilson as Orm, a villain who is also Aquaman’s half-brother. Nicole Kidman will play Aquaman’s mother, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will play Black Manta.
