Warning – SPOILERS for AMC’s The Walking Dead…

Last week’s The Walking Dead took us back to King Ezekiel and The Kingdom, where a routine tribute drop with the Saviors resulted in the death of one of their own after Richard took matters into this own hands. Richard wanted to provoke the Saviors into killing him so that Ezekiel would be prompted to join Rick in his fight to defeat Negan. But young Benjamin ended up being the one killed. In a shocking turn of events, Morgan abandoned his “all life is sacred” creed when he killed Richard with his bare hands because of what happened with Benjamin. But, in the end, Richard’s plan worked: Not only is Ezekiel now ready to fight, but Carol is joining the fray now that she knows what Negan really did to the Alexandrians.

This week’s episode, 7.14 “The Other Side,” goes back to the Hilltop Colony, opening on a few days prior to when Rosita shows up to get Sasha to accompany her on a mission to kill Negan or die trying. We see the Hilltop people making weapons and practicing fighting, as pregnant Maggie mades plans for battle, while the community’s official leader Gregory remains hidden in his office. We also see Daryl at the colony keeping to himself. The opening sequence ends with Rosita going to Sasha, which we saw in a previous episode.

After the opening, Jesus sits outside having a heart-to-heart with Maggie about what his life was like when he first came to Hilltop, and how he feels more connected now. He admits that he had had trouble getting close to people before — “neighbors, friends,” he says, pausing before saying “boyfriends” with a raised eyebrow. This was a subtle reveal for this character, who is gay in the comic book series.

Sasha takes the opportunity during Jesus and Maggie’s conversation to sneak into their trailer to get bullets, but Enid and Jesus find her there. They realize what Sasha and Rosita are up to, and Jesus pleas with her to stay. Or at least tell Maggie before she goes. But before anything can happen, the Saviors arrive for an unscheduled visit. Maggie and Daryl have to hide in one of the cellars because Negan thinks Maggie is dead and that Daryl is on the run. Meanwhile, Sasha and Rosita make it outside the gates through a secret exit.

It turns out, the Saviors are there to take the Hilltop doctor “” Dr. Harlan Carson, brother of the Sanctuary’s doctor who Negan recently killed “” back to work for them. Of course, the Saviors – here led by Simon – are slimy douchebags as usual and Gregory once again tries to make deals. He also insinuates that he might be overthrown by his own people. Simon says that if Gregory needs him, he can come see him at the Sanctuary “” and gives him the location!!! That’s a huge deal.

For some unexplained reason, one of the Saviors decides to go sniffing around in the cellar where Daryl and Maggie are hiding, despite Enid’s attempts to draw his attention away from the area. Daryl makes a move like he’s going to kill the Savior, but Maggie stops him, and the man eventually leaves. Once alone again, Maggie asks Daryl why he’s been avoiding her – he hasn’t even looked at her since he got to Hilltop. She asks that he please look at her, and when he does, he’s in tears. “I’m sorry,” he says, his voice cracking, “I’m sorry.” He’s sorry about what happened with Glenn, and blames himself for his death. “It wasn’t your fault,” Maggie says, absolving her friend. “It was,” he insists, but she maintains that he wasn’t at fault. “You’re one of the good things in this world,” she tells him, saying that that’s what Glenn used to say about him “” and Glenn would know, because he was one of the good things too. She goes on to explain that she too wanted to kill the Savior and wants to string them all up and watch them die, but that they need to win. They hug as she tells him, “Help me win.”

Outside, Sasha and Rosita make their way towards the Sanctuary, while trying to hot-wire a car as they fight off walkers. At one point, Rosita sees Sasha wearing the necklace that she made for Abraham. “You like that?,” Rosita asks Sasha. “I made it.” As they go on, Sasha asks how Rosita knows how to diffuse bombs (we saw her do this in a previous episode). But Rosita is still semi-hostile towards Sasha, not wanting to get to know each other. Either they talk about their mission or not at all, she says. So Sasha talks about buildings that Jesus said are near the Sanctuary that they can go to and sniper attack Negan from afar. But Rosita wants to get inside the compound and make sure she kills Negan.

Eventually, Sasha and Rosita make it to the building and set their sites on the Sanctuary. They see Eugene in the yard bossing people around, but Rosita figures he’s just playing along. Sasha sees Rosita making knots, and says that their group is lucky to have her because she knows how to do “everything.” As they wait for Negan to surface, the women finally have their moment of bonding and forgiveness. Rosita reveals that before meeting Abraham, she had run around with different men, picking up everything she could learn from them “” tying knots, defusing bombs, hot wiring cars, etc. “” and that once she’d learned all she could, she would take off. “The sex was just for fun,” she admits, saying that it’s the end of the world, everyone should be able to get their rocks off. Sasha asks if that’s how it was for her with Abraham. No, it wasn’t, Rosita says, saying she got in with Abraham because of all of the things she already knew. She hadn’t planned to look back “” that is, until he dumped her for Sasha. Rosita says that when she and Abraham first got to Alexandria, she acted like everything was all good because he wasn’t. After he left her, she thought she hated Sasha, but now she realizes it was just a lot of wasted time. She was happy that Abraham had been happy, but regrets that she never got to tell him that before he was killed. “Were you happy?,” she asks Sasha. “I was,” Sasha replies, with tears in her eyes. They both talk about how it wasn’t Abraham’s time to die, and that he should have been able to go out fighting, but Negan stole that right from him. “No matter how things go down, I got your back,” Sasha says. “And I’ve got yours,” Rosita replies. That’s it, the women have moved on and they are ready to end Negan for what he’s done. They run back to the window and see that the Saviors have brought their doctor “” Maggie’s doctor “” to the Sanctuary. Eugene is there kissing Negan’s ass, but there’s no clear shot on Negan. On the walkie talkie, they overhear Eugene repeatedly referring to himself as Chief Engineer, and more importantly, as “Negan” “” a sure sign that he is now one of the Saviors. Eugene also reveals that Negan will be “indisposed” for the time being, the women decide it’s time to go in.

That night at the Hilltop, Gregory summons Jesus to his office. He says Jesus is slacking off on his scavenging and recruiting duties, and that the man’s trailer has too many people in it. The leader also has assignments ready for the Alexandrians, so they can earn their way there. But his tone is passive aggressive and Jesus takes what he’s saying as a threat, saying that Gregory must be worried if he’s trying to separate everyone. He flat out asks Gregory if he’s threatening him, but the leader plays it off “” but we know he is! When Jesus leaves, Daryl comes to him asking where’s Sasha and Rosita!

The final sequence is back at the Sanctuary that night with Sasha and Rosita breaking into the compound. They see Eugene in the yard with someone and kill the man he’s with. They tell Eugene that they are there to break him out, but the cowardly man cowers and cries that he doesn’t want to go, and then runs off. Rosita now knows for sure that they’ve lost him and that he’s a weak coward as usual. Finally, Sasha gets the gated fence open and goes through, but then locks it, preventing Rosita from following. “It’s not your time,” Sasha tells Rosita, saying that their people need her. Sasha plans on completing this mission on her own so that Rosita can go back and be there for their people. Rosita is frustrated to be left out and tries to get in, but then Saviors start coming out and she has to take off. In the shadows, there’s a man watching her; he’s got his hood up with some hair sticking out and he’s got a crossbow over his shoulder, but you can’t see his face. Who was that? It looks like Daryl, but could he have made it there that quickly? It’s possible that it’s Dwight, who is hopefully there to help Sasha and Rosita defeat Negan.

  1. Can’t wait for the series to end already. That is how bad it sucks.
