Rumor: Sony Wants ‘Venom’ As An R-Rated Movie
  |  @   |

Spider-Man continues to be Sony’s flagship superhero. But now that studios are in the business of shared universes, Sony wants to cash in on the same success they are having. However, their first attempt was less than successful thanks in no small part to The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s underperforming box office numbers. But now that they are sharing the Webslinger with Marvel Studios, they are going to take another stab at it starting with Venom.

More on the story below.

Just a few weeks ago, Sony announced that they would be releasing Venom for an October 2018 release. This was followed by the news that a Black Cat and Silver Sable spinoff was in development with Thor: Ragnarok scribe Chris Yost penning the script. As far as we know these characters will not be a part of the MCU. While we know that Marvel will have creative input on Spider-Man, himself, that doesn’t seem to extend to any of the supporting characters or villains that Sony owns. Because of that, it gives way for Sony to create franchises for Spidey’s friends.

So it comes as no surprise that they would want to create their own using the characters they have the rights to. Part of the fun of this continually developing franchise is to see what the studio can come up with. And now we know what to expect from the upcoming Venom. According to Collider, Venom will be rated R. It’s a rating that seems befitting of the anti-hero. The success of Deadpool and Logan surely helped inspire Sony to make such a decision.

Here’s what we know so far: Dante Harper (Alien: Covenant) will write the script and the film will be produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. However, Collider warns us that nothing is set in stone just yet, and the studio could change their mind. Granted there is no director or even an actor to play the title character. Still, there should be no reason for the studio to do anything, but an R-rated Venom. It has worked for one comic book property, so it can work for another as long as it is for the right character.

Venom is currently scheduled for an October 5, 2018 release.
