‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Will Make The Vulture A “Dark Tony Stark”

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Adrian Toomes aka The Vulture is a recurring villain in the Spidey-verse, but has never made an appearance in any of the films. Until now. Michael Keaton will be playing the winged villain in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming,, starring Tom Holland as the Webhead. Though most remember him as a genius who developed flight technology, audiences will be introduced a new variation of the character.

With a new trailer hitting the Internet tomorrow, we will probably find out more about him and why he is being considered a “Dark Tony Stark.” More on this story below.

USA Today was the first to provide some new details on who Toomes is and what his motivations are. Director Jon Watts told the publication, “We’ve seen what it’s like to be a billionaire inventor and to be a Norse god. We’ve seen the very top of this world. But we’ve never seen what it’s like to be just a regular joe.”

So what exactly makes Toomes a “regular Joe”? Well, he’s a blue-collar worker who cleans up the city of New York after major incidents usually involving the Avengers. But as Watts says “he becomes irked when after one altercation, a new government organization, founded by A-list businessman Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), steps in to take over.” This angers Toomes to a point where he goes in the criminal business. “He and his crew “” including the Shocker (Bokeem Woodbine) and the Tinkerer (Michael Chernus) “” use scavenged alien artifacts and stolen advanced tech to put together amazing weaponry to sell to other criminals,” says Eric Hauserman Carroll.

Watts adds that Toomes assembles “this neat junk from all the other movies,” which will then be repurposed as supervillain equipment. “It’s a really great starting point for the villains to have the Vulture picking over the stuff and finding the valuable exotic elements and having the Tinkerer assemble into something that could be used,” said the director.

Keaton describes Toomes as a victim: “He probably would have a strong argument that he never got a fair shot “” a lot of “˜Why not me? Where’s mine?'” While being burned by Stark is one aspect of his motivation, Toomes firmly believes that using what he has will help him gain a monetary advantage. “He thinks once he has this money and power, he’ll have more control of his life,” Carroll adds. But his criminal activity gains the attention of one Webslinger. And soon it looks like Iron Man and Spidey will have to team up to beat a common foe.

As for the trailer, well, it’s best not to dissect a six-second trailer. But it looks like the spider emblem on the chest of Spider-Man’s suit is much more than something to let villains know who he is.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7.

  1. I don’t know anything about the Vulture from the comics but this sounds like an interesting premise to me.
