One thing is for sure, Luc Besson really likes to think outside the box. That is pretty clear in what we have been seeing in the marketing campaign for his new film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. A new trailer dropped this morning, giving us another look at the space opera The Professional director has created. Some even call the film the spiritual successor to The Fifth Element. Judging by the looks of things, that is very true.
Check out the trailer below.
Set in an unknown future, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets centers on the title character (Dane DeHaan) and his partner Agent Laureline (Cara Delevingne). The two keep things orderly throughout the universe for the government of the human territories. That is until their captain (Clive Owen) sends them to Alpha, a city where its denizens share technology and knowledge with each other. But a shadowy group plans to destroy the city and the two have less than ten hours to prevent those plans from being carried out.
The film really knocks it out of the park, at least on a visual scale. Everything looks epic, detailed, and tangible. A huge step up from the technology that brought us The Fifth Element. Now it’s starting to make sense why some are calling Valerian the spiritual successor.
Rooted in the classic graphic novel series, Valerian and Laureline- visionary writer/director Luc Besson advances this iconic source material into a contemporary, unique and epic science fiction saga. Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.
Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets also stars Rihanna, Kris Wu, John Goodman, and Ethan Hawke.
The film is set to open in theaters on July 27, 2017.
