Last week on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Legends headed to World War I where J.R.R.Tolkien (yes, that one) could point them to the Blood of Christ, needed to destroy the Spear of Destiny, which was now whole and whispering to them. They got the blood but lose the spear via Leonard Snart (not in Mick’s head). Mick (Dominic Purcell), sick of being on the outside, joined the Legion of Doom, and changed the fabric of reality. Many Lord of the Rings references splashed throughout this episode, including a speech by Rip (Arthur Darvill) clearly meant to inspire Tolkien.

Spoilers below.

DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow 2.16 “Doomworld” review: It opens with Eobard Thawne (Matt Letscher) narrating about the “brave new world.”

It is a new Star City, 2017, and Mayor Damian Darhk (Neal McDonough) has his lackies, Amaya and Sara (Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Caity Lotz), chase down Ms. Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), a vigilante, and kill her. He adds her mask to the collection of masks (they are all there).

Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) goes to talk to Thawne. Thawne questions why he wants the spear – his wife and son are happy, Thea loves him, his hand is back, and Nyssa is locked up. But Malcolm still wants to change a few things.

Thawne is having a blast being the puppetmaster to the former Legends. Jefferson and Stein (Franz Drameh, Victor Garber) works for Thawne at S.T.A.R. Labs. Thawne and Darhk enjoy the poetic justice. Merlyn thinks it’s sloppy. Jefferson is a mean boss over Stein. Ray (Brandon Routh) works as a janitor.

Mick and Snart (Wentworth Miller) rob a bank, but the cops let them go. Mick wants a challenge.

Snart: “Even get us tossed Iron Heights and we could plan an escape just like old times.” Squee!!!!! I’ve been binging Prison Break, getting ready for season 5. Thawne summons them to keep an eye on Merlyn.

Rip is trapped on the ship making fondue cakes in a silk robe. “There’s no point in fighting. Not anymore.” He always gets the short end of the stick when it comes to all this.

New reality Nate (Nick Zano) goes to Thawne, the genius, for help because he can see the “scars” of reality. He wants him to put the world back the way it was. Thawne tells Snart and Mick to kill him. “My mom’s the only person who reads my blog.” Snart points the gun, but Mick knocks him out and saves Nate.

Mick: “I’m not part of anything. I just made a terrible mistake.”

They go pick up Ray who instinctually made a reality gun. Mick points it at Nate’s head and shoots. Nate gets up and punches Mick in the face. “It works,” Mick says.

He then fixes Ray, who punches him in the face. “I deserved that.”

Ray: “So many toilets.”

Amaya and Sara are summoned to capture Mick. They burst in, weapons drawn. They turn Sara back. Cue punch.

Gideon yells at Rip for not being a captain. Out comes the trench coat.

Amaya returns and Sara does a few minutes after that, but Darhk is no dummy. He figures her out and gets ready to kill her.

Snart: “Really? Now’s the time for a bad guy monologue?” Oh my god. I love him. And it was true.

They fix Jax, send him to rescue Stein, and plan to stop Thawne from destroying the spear. They abandon Mick who goes back to Snart. He tells Merlyn and Darhk of their plan which meshes nicely with the plan to kill Thawne. They all converge to the reactor. There’s a really cute part where Nate and Darhk almost high five. Snart and Mick come in and save the day at the last second… for a few seconds.

They all fight for the spear. Mick grabs it and after words with Snart gives it to Amaya, whom Snart kills. But Thawne wakes up in time to throw the spear into the fire. Thawne lets them all go as a fitting punishment to live their bleak lives.

Rip is successful at getting communications up and running, but he doesn’t realize he is in a model size timeship at S.T.A.R. Labs. The team wants to go back in time and get the Spear from themselves.

Although the result of the episode was somber at best, this episode was as full of the levity that we’ve come to expect and love from Legends. I always love the alternate reality episodes of The Flash and any show, and Legends of Tomorrow does it every week. I loved this week.

One thing I do not like is that Snart is a total bad guy. Even when we were first introduced to him, there were layers and these layers are not showing as much.

And everyone better start being nicer to my Mick Rory!

The season 2 finale of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow airs next Tuesday night at 8:00pm ET on The CW.
