Last week’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, was one of the best episodes to date. The Legion of Doom (and Mick Rory – Dominic Purcell), finally got their hands on the Spear of Destiny, and fashioned a new reality to their liking. Eobard Thawne (Matt Lescher) became the head of S.T.A.R. Labs, as well as the smartest and richest man in the world. He also had Stein and Jax (Victor Garber, Franz Drameh) as his work slaves, and Ray (Brandon Routh) as the janitor. Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) reunited with his entire (alive) happy family. Damian Darhk (Neal McDonough) was the mayor of Star City, and had his goons, Amaya and Sara (Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Caity Lotz) take out all the superheroes, including vigilante Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards), and has an impressive mask trophy case. Snart (Wentworth Miller) and Rory robbed banks with no challenge. Everyone except Thawne was dissatisfied. When geeky Nate (Nick Zano) went to Thawne for help because he somehow knew that time was messed up, he ordered the boys to kill him. Mick couldn’t go through with it, and they hooked up with Ray, who invented a gun to restore their former memories. They fixed most of them (except Stein), and after a bunch of fights, Thawne prevailed and destroyed the spear, locking them in that reality forever.

DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow 2.17 “Aruba” review: The timeship is miniaturized, but mini-Rip does find them. They need to unshrink it, but not before they find it and Darhk finds them. Mick takes him Darhk out in a minute a(in his Mick way) and they fix the ship and go back to France, 1916.

All Mick wants to do is go to Aruba. Side note: Mick keeps calling Nate “pretty,” the nickname of his fictional brother played by Wentworth Miller on Prison Break.

Thawne follows them to World War I and rips Ray’s heart out of his chest. The future legends do some intricate dodging and retrieve the spear from their past selves. However, because Nate is so overwhelmed at the sight of Amaya, he makes them lag and they get trapped on the past ship, because some of “them” are returning. They all confront each other and the timequakes start to happen. They all go to have a talk with themselves. Nate tells Nate to tell Amaya he loves her (that’s right).

Snart, Darhk, and Merlyn fire on the ship and they try to make a jump. There’s a crazy time storm and the ship is too damaged. The plan is for the past selves to make it to the future waverider. The other Nate, Mick, and Jax die at the Legion’s hands. But the Legion does get defeated. That is, until Thawne and dozens of his other selves surround them. Two can play the doubles (triples, quadruples, etc. game). He takes them out one by one until there’s only Sara and Rip, who encourages her to use the spear before he too is “ripped” away. She chants and closes her eyes, and opens them to a comfortable room with her sister.

Fake Laurel: “It needs someone strong enough to do the right thing.” Sara is that person, despite her darkness. This is a great scene, where Sara finally gets to have closure with her sister. She opens her eyes to the same scene as before. She made a tiny change, unbeknownst to Thawne. He tries to use the spear, and realizes what she has done. It is powerless.

Thawne ceases to exist, and all is well with the legends. They return the other 3/4 of the Legion of Doom to their respective timelines, and erase their memories. There is an emotional (for me) scene between Mick and Snart, before Mick leaves Snart puzzled where he was first recruited.

Rip wants to leave because he has nothing to teach them. Without him, they set a course for Aruba, but they get caught in another time storm.

They crash in Los Angeles, 2017, and there are dinosaurs running around.

Sara: “Guys? I think we broke time.” And there is the premise for season 3.

Nice cliffhanger! This was a fun and exciting end to a fun and exciting season of this awesome show. This is how I imagine the writer’s room: “Okay guys, think of the craziest and most ridiculous thing that could happen in any place and at any moment in time, and we’ll do that.”

They fixed all of the time mistakes and the crazy loops of repercussions this season, the best way that they could – by making the spear inert right before it was used by Thawne. That they didn’t end it on a “happily ever after” note only shows that despite their audience coming along for this crazy ride that is completely unbelievable, they are not stupid and know that there are real consequences for some of the decisions (even though they had no choice) they have made.

Season 3 of DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow will return Fall, 2017.
