‘Captain Marvel’ Will Be Directed By ‘Half Nelson’ and ‘It’s Kind Of A Funny Story’ Team

Captain Marvel

Marvel Studios certainly has an eye for finding talented directors. In their search for a director for Captain Marvel, the studio considered Niki Caro (Whale Rider, MacFarland, USA), Lesli Linka Glatter (TV’s Mad Men), and Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World).

But it seems like those reports were off just a bit. There’s word that the duo who have worked on Half Nelson, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, and Mississippi Grind together, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will direct Marvel’s first female-led superhero flick starring Brie Larson. More on the story below.

THR says the decision came down to the wire. Since they announced Larson playing the lead role, they have been searching for a director to helm the film. Marvel had met with Lucia Aniello (Rough Night) earlier this year as they were polishing the script.

Other directors under consideration were Sam-Taylor Johnson (Fifty Shades Of Grey), Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) and Jennifer Yuh (Kung Fu Panda 2).

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige made finding a female director for Captain Marvel a top priority. Of course, this hiring sorta fulfills that promise. But remember, the film is written by Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Nicole Perlman and Inside Out‘s Meg LeFauve.

Boden and Fleck are well-known indie directors having written and directed It’s Kind of a Funny Story starring Keir Gilchrist (who starred on Showtime’s The United States of Tara with Larson), Zach Galifianakis, and Emma Roberts, and Mississippi Grind starring Ben Mendelsohn and Ryan Reynolds. They also co-wrote Half Nelson starring Ryan Gosling, whose performance earned him his first Oscar nomination, with Fleck directing. Since then, they have found their way into television episodes of The Affair and Billions.

This, of course, wouldn’t be the first time that Marvel chose talent with a TV background to direct a film. The Russo brothers had directed a handful of episodes of Community before jumping aboard Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, and the two upcoming Avengers films. Alan Taylor directed a few episodes of Game of Thrones before landing the gig to direct Thor: The Dark World.

Feige has said that Captain Marvel will be an origins story. The script is also being adjusted to avoid being like Reynolds’ Green Lantern.

Considering that the film will be released after Avengers: Infinity War, there are some questions as to if the third Avengers film will have Captain Marvel at all. Will she be introduced in the film like Wonder Woman was in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and then have her origins explained in the title film, or does Marvel have something else up their sleeve?

Captain Marvel is scheduled to hit theaters on March 8, 2019.
