Last time on The Magicians, Julia, Quentin, and Mayakovsky (Stella Maeve, Jason Ralph, Brían F. O’Byrne) successfully merged Alice’s (Olivia Taylor Dudley) shade with her Niffin, resurrecting her. But she was upset and hating Quentin, furiously writing down spells as she was losing her magical knowledge. Reynard (Mackenzie Astin) killed his son’s wife to get him on his side. What? Of course, that didn’t work. He forced Kady (Jade Tailor) to kill him to get the magic they all needed. Now that worked, although Kady was really messed up. They lured Reynard, but then the real Lady of the Underground came and Julia allowed her to take him. Kady was furious, but the reward for Julia was her shade. Penny (Arjun Gupta) and Sylvia find the book they need, and Sylvia sacrificed herself so Penny could take it. Q found the clock – the buyer was Umber, who was supposedly dead. He had no use for Fillory, and told Q that Umber doesn’t either, which was why everything was turning crazy (crazier) there.

Spoilers for the finale below!

The Magicians 2.13 “We Have Brought You Little Cakes” (Finale) review: The finale begins with Ember (Dominic Burgess) narrating the entire Fillory story. He pretty much caused every single thing that happened. However, he is “almost done with Fillory.” He calls this, “Fillory’s Last Gasp.” That’s not a good sign.

Alice: “Why did you bring me back?”

Quentin: “I love you.” He gives her a potion to stop her from burning herself.

Penny has magic cancer. Kady is strung out. He has very little time left, so cue the vacation, but he has to run a few errands first.

Julia is crying and having panic attacks at home when Eliot comes by looking for the god invisibility amulet. Moved by her suffering, he asks her to put on pants join him. They go to Mayakovsky’s. Penny shows up and tells Eliot to change what he’s currently doing because it doesn’t work in his book. The library snatches Penny and banishes Kady. No!!!!!

Margo and Josh found Fen but she wont leave without her baby. The fairy queen summons them and gives them a plant to draw out Ember, to be baked into “little cakes.” Margo and Josh reappear in the castle (because the fairy realm is in the same place just another dimension – think Stephen King’s The Langoliers). The steep fairy payment was Margo’s eye. Whoa! SHe’s still gorgeous, though. The plan is to party. But the party is way boring. Still… Ember shows up.

Eliot need Q because he speaks “fluent fanboy.” Q goes to Umber, who takes him to his new pocket world “formerly known as Cuba.” The world is black and white and has linguine, but is very orderly. It needs chaos. Umber needs Ember. Cuba is in a snow globe which Julia snatched and brought to Fillory. She shakes it and Q and Umber come tumbling out. At first the gods are happy to see each other, but then remember all the baggage (plus the fake death and unnecessary grieving). Ember kills Umber for real, and just as he is about to wipe out Fillory, Julia comes wielding a god-killing sword. He starts choking her, so Quentin comes in for the save.

Eliot: “Q? I think you just saved the whole world.” He did, didn’t he?

Things seem better. Margo grabs a few Constitutions so her subjects can make a new one. Kady makes a deal to spy on Penny to save his life. Q brings Alice some bacon (awesome). Then they have sex. He tells her about Ember, and she yells at him because gods have parents and can call the plumber to shut off magic. And the plumber does (not an analogy).

Magic is gone. Brakebills’ students still study just in case it comes back. Alice gets a warning that a monster is coming for her. And the fairies are about to storm Fillory.

Julia shows Q she still has some spark of magic. I knew it would be her out of everyone.

Such an exciting end – a conclusion and a cliffhanger rolled into one. This fantastical series has captured me right from the start, and it is no wonder that everyone is catching magic fever. The actors are young, beautiful, and funny. The writing blends all the fantasy you could ever want with clever and humorous pop culture reference-y dialogue. The only thing I am not looking forward to is the long wait between seasons.

What a fantastic recap at the beginning!

See you in season 3!
