Disney Sets Release Dates For ‘Star Wars: Episode IX,’ ‘Indiana Jones 5,’ ‘The Lion King,’ More
  |  @   |

Fox isn’t the only one dropping major release dates for their upcoming films.

Disney has now scheduled dates for Star Wars: Episode IX and Indiana Jones 5, as well as The Lion King, some of their upcoming animated films like Frozen 2 and Wreck-It Ralph 2, and more. Check out the dates below.

Per THR, Indiana Jones 5 is being pushed back a full year from its original July 19, 2019 release all the way to July 10, 2020. Oddly enough, this date also happens to be on the release of an untitled Marvel movie, so don’t expect it to stick for very long. As for competition, the film opens after Minions 2, which hits theaters on July 3, 2020. WB will be releasing an untitled DC film just a few weeks after.

But Disney has a good reason for pushing the film back. It’s to make way for Jon Favreau’s version of The Lion King, which will take Indiana Jones 5‘s old date. The film stars Donald Glover as Simba, with Beyonce Knowles voicing Nala. James Earl Jones returns to voice Mufasa, Simba’s father.

Moving back to Lucasfilm, Star Wars: Episode IX now has to go to back to the drawing board in the wake of Carrie Fisher’s passing. It’s still not clear how much of a role Leia played in the upcoming sequel, but the ninth installment of the Star Wars saga will be moving back to its traditional May release month and hit theaters on May 24, 2017. The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and the upcoming The Last Jedi have December openings.

Episode IX marks the end of the trilogy, and it’s not clear what Disney has in store for the franchise. It’s not as though they are going to stop continuing the saga or releasing spinoffs as both have proven to be very successful for them since they acquired the property back in 2013.

Disney Animated Studio features are also experiencing some date shifting. Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 has been moved from March 9, 2018, to Nov. 21, 2018. That’s not too far off from when the original Wreck-It Ralph was released. It basically takes over Disney’s Gigantic date. That film, which will feature music from Frozen‘s Kristen-Anderson Lopez and Robert Lopez, is being pushed all the way to November 20, 2020. Speaking of Frozen, Frozen 2 opens in theaters on November 27, 2019.

Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time gets pushed up from its April 6, 2018, to March 9, 2018. Finally, Magic Camp opens April 2018.
