Inhumans

Marvel has no shortage of properties they can use to adapt for the big or small screen. Considering how popular television has become, it’s no surprise that the studio would want to have a piece of that market. Now we are getting our first look at two of their newest shows. The Inhumans, which was once a film that has now become a TV series, though that doesn’t mean it won’t be getting the film treatment as its pilot will debut in IMAX theaters. Runaways is the second show. While it won’t have anything as grand as The Inhumans, the show has already been picked up by Hulu, so that’s a very good sign. Check out the first images and a teaser for The Inhumans, below.

So here’s the first look at The Royal Family from The Inhumans, courtesy of EW.

The Inhumans First Look

Now, based on the first look for The Inhumans cast, you might think the costume design is nothing short of a trainwreck. However, the show is working with a budget that is considerably lower than what they would have got if it were a film. But based on what Scott Buck told EW, this creative decision may have been purely intentional.

“We approach these [characters] all as real people who just happen to have these abilities, so they’re all very grounded.”

For those who are not familiar with the comic book title, The Inhumans follows a superhuman-powered class of people whose Inhuman powers are awakened when they breathe in the “Terrigen Mist.” Those who survived become what fans know as The Royal Family. The members of this family are Black Bolt (Anson Mount), the leader of the group who is forced to use sign language in order to communicate because he has a destructive hypersonic voice. Then there’s Medusa (Serinda Swan), the wife of her distant cousin Black Bolt, who uses her long, thick head of red hair to defeat her enemies. The rest of the supporting cast includes Gorgon (Eme Ikwuakor), the strongest member with hooves that can create seismic waves; Karnak (Ken Leung), a martial artist who can find the weakness in anything; Crystal (Isabelle Cornish), Medusa’s sister, who can manipulate Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. And finally, Maximus (Iwan Rheon), the mind-controlling brother of Black Bolt who tries to overthrow him from time to time.

While this isn’t the first time that we’ve seen The Inhumans in the MCU, Buck does not rule out the possiblity of crossover with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., where the superpowered humans were first introduced.

“Things that have happened on S.H.I.E.L.D. will potentially affect our show as well.”

There’s also a teaser, with the emphasis on tease, that provides just the title while Maximus proposed the idea of treason to gain control of Royal Family. You can check that out below.

The Inhumans will debut in IMAX on September 1, 2017 for a limited two-week engagement, and then move on to regular television broadcasting on ABC from then on.

Moving on to Runaways, the show was recently picked up by Hulu. While it may not get the IMAX treatment, its tone and premise is very intriguing. O.C. and Gossip Girl showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are overseeing the show. As you can imagine, there will be a teen soap opera twist to this. Hopefully, it will find a way to set itself apart from Freeform’s Cloak and Dagger. But our first look at the team comes to us from the Runaway‘s official twitter taccount.

As for the characters, here’s a brief description of them from a previous report.

Rhenzy Feliz as Alex Wilder is a loud-and-proud nerd. Admittedly a bit of a loner, Alex spends much of his free-time playing video games, but deep down, what he wants most is to reunite his childhood group of friends.

Lyrica Okano as Nico Minoru – tough, intelligent, and independent–embodies teenage angst. A budding “Wiccan,” Nico’s carefully crafted goth appearance isolates her from her peers and family, but maybe what she really needs is someone to talk to.

Virginia Gardner as Karolina Dean, model-perfect exterior with a lot going on behind her professionally whitened smile, is burdened by the lofty expectations and responsibilities put upon her by her parents. Underneath her veneer of privilege and perfection, Karolina is experiencing a newfound eagerness to explore her identity and pursue her own desires.

Ariela Barer as Gert Yorkes is a purple-haired, bespectacled, contemporary riot grrrl. Never passing up a moment to stand on a soapbox, Gert sometimes wields her persona as a brash social justice warrior to mask her true feelings.

Gregg Sulkin as Chase Stein is a lacrosse-playing, high school heartthrob. While many write him off as a dumb jock, Chase exhibits flashes of untapped brilliance in engineering, not unlike his wildly successful father’s.

Allegra Acosta as Molly Hernandez, the youngest and most innocent member of her friend group, is known for her peppy positivity and a deep yearning to belong.

Runaways will debut on Hulu later this Fall.
