‘The Mummy’ Trailer: Tom Cruise Has No Idea What He’s Unleashed

Universal's The Mummy

Sometimes explorers should just leave ancient temples be. But where’s the fun in that? We’ve all heard the story before of an ancient evil being unleashed on accident, on purpose, or just because someone is curious. It’s all been done before. But for Universal’s reboot of The Mummy, it’s a little bit different. That’s because it’s a part of a dark universe of monsters.

In the film’s final action-packed trailer we see Tom Cruise being attacked by ancient monsters and hurled out of vehicles. All the while, audiences will “Witness The Beginning of a Dark Universe.” Check out the final trailer below.

Unlike some of the traditional Mummy films, Cruise’s Nick Morton isn’t just an ordinary hero or a descendant of a long-lost lineage of protectors. He’s cursed. Don’t worry, that’s not a spoiler. However, in the trailer, we learn that the Mummy (Sofia Boutella) cannot be defeated by magic or guns. Instead, Dr. Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe) says “It takes a monster to defeat a monster.” And it just so happens that Nick is indeed a monster.

While the idea of another shared universe may sound boring and redundant, perhaps the idea of one needs to step away from comic books. Universal has been setting up one for quite some time, and The Mummy is the jumping off point. However, the Universal Monsters universe won’t be like the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the DC Extended Universe. Meaning, there won’t be an ensemble of heroes from each standalone film coming together to defeat a common foe.

Instead, we will be getting more complex titular characters – from The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, and Bride of Frankenstein to Van Helsing, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and more – with one common thread that connect them all together. That common thread appears to be Dr. Jekyll, although that has yet to be confirmed.

The film also stars Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, and Courtney B. Vance.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

Directed by Alex Kurtzman, who uses a script from Jon Spaihts and Christopher McQuarrie, The Mummy opens in theaters on June 9, 2017.
