‘The Glass Castle’ Trailer: Brie Larson In A Beautifully Emotional Adaption Of A Powerful Memoir

The Glass Castle starring Brie Larson and Naomi Watts

Yes, Brie Larson already has one Academy Award on her mantle. But in reality, that number should be two with her flawless performance in Destin Daniel Cretton‘s Short Term 12. The emotionally draining film had me in tears and was my number one film of 2013.

Nearly four years after Short Term 12, the two reunite for The Glass Castle, an adaptation of Jeanette Walls‘ memoir. Lionsgate has dropped the first trailer for the film. Check it out below.

Based on Walls’ memoir, The Glass Castle will tell the story of the author’s life as a renowned New York journalist whose unconventional upbringing has driven a wedge between her and her family. As a kid, she and her loving but highly dysfunctional family would constantly be moving from town to town and often would be squatting in abandoned houses. Their free-spirited parents (played by Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts) would offer them an education that they could never get at a traditional school.

But at some point in time, it becomes clear that that kind of unconventional upbringing wasn’t any good for Jeanette. Soon she becomes the journalist that we see in the film. But there is so much more to it than that. And as we see in the trailer, there is plenty of emotional depth to go around. And we’ll get to see how the story comes together (or falls apart depending on your point of view) as the film is split into two time periods: one focusing on a younger version of Walls and the other centered on an older Walls (played by Larson).

The trailer first appeared on EW. Here’s what Watts had to say about her co-star Larson.

“They did a spectacular job bringing to life a complicated story, there’s so many nuances. I wanted Brie Larson to play this role even before I knew who she was. She understands how to be strong and vulnerable at the same time, how you can fight and be scared at the same time.”

Max Greenfield also stars.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Chronicling the adventures of an eccentric, resilient and tight-knit family, THE GLASS CASTLE is a remarkable story of unconditional love. Oscar® winner Brie Larson brings Jeannette Walls’s best-selling memoir to life as a young woman who, influenced by the joyfully wild nature of her deeply dysfunctional father (Woody Harrelson), found the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.

The Glass Castle opens in theaters on August 11, 2017.
