Last week on Gotham, Penguin and Nygma (Robin Lord Taylor, Cory Michael Smith) called a truce to help each other escape. Killing each other could wait. Selina (Camren Bicondova) tried to kill Bruce 2 (David Mazouz), but he knocked her out right after she told Alfred (Sean Pertwee) the truth. Then Bruce 2 knocked him out. Lee (Morena Baccharin) blamed herself for Mario’s death after a nightmare and a visit to the Mad Hatter (Benedict Samuel). She stole the virus and then injected herself. The real Bruce put away his bad memories and felt nothing. Barnes (Michael Chiklis) almost killed Jim (Ben McKenzie), but he was saved by the GCPD. Jim and Bullock (Donal Logue) questioned Kathryn (Leslie Hendrix) who gave away nothing, even after Alfred put a knife through her hand. She ordered Barnes to save her so he cut off her head in response.

Spoilers below.

Gotham 3.20 “Heroes Rise: Pretty Hate Machine” review: The Court of Owls is in session and Bruce finds it hard to pass judgment. Shaman (Raymond J Barry) does it and has the entire court killed. And he has a boss? Who is this mystery person?

Ed fills Tabitha, Butch and Barbara (Jessica Lucas, Drew Powell, Erin Richards) on the Penguin situation. Selina doesn’t want to join the Ivy/Penguin team and jets. Ed and Butch corner Penguin, or so they think. It’s a trap! Tabitha catches Selina though.

Jim goes to see Lee. She tells him she knows what the virus has awakened in her (her love for him), and wants to awaken something in him. That obviously means to bury him alive. She goes to the GCPD taunting them with Jim’s disappearance.

“Out of the ashes, a dark hero will rise.” Shivers.

Bullock charges Alfred with getting the info out of Dr Strange. He hangs him off a roof until he sings. I love Alfred’s badass methods. Alfred arrives just as Bruce is about to detonate. Bruce hesitates, and the shaman presses the button for him. Alfred kills him, but we know there’s a bigger boss.

The Riddler crew corners Penguin at the greenhouse. Just as Ed is about to kill him, in glides Fish Mooney (Jada Pnikett-Smith). She come to collect her Penguin, and walks right out of there, saving him.

Jim refuses to take the virus to save his own life, but when he realizes he knows where the bomb is and no one else does. He takes it and punches his way out. Still Jim, he runs to the clock to stop the bomb, and Lee gets in his way, so it is too late. The Alice Tetch virus explodes into the air.

The episode was chock full of crazy this week (when is it not?), but pretty much every character except Barnes and Mad Hatter had something to do. I never thought the bomb was going to go off. Hopefully, genius Strange has an antidote up his sleeve as his own leverage. He’s a scrappy survivor, that one.

Some thoughts:

– I love the bromance between Bullock and Gordon. That is all.

– How many people besides me thinks Lee got 1000 times sexier now that she’s bad? Just like Barbara.

– Poor Alfred has some work to do.

– Butch was just adorable in his Fish worship, annoying Tabitha.

– Penguin better start appreciating Ivy. He ruined his true friendship with Ed, and people just don’t stay loyal to him. She’s so likable in her loyalty, even though he does NOT deserve it.

– I recently read something about how Gotham is just one of the different Earths in the multiverse. Makes sense. I cannot dare hope for a crossover with the CW, seeing as how Gotham and Supergirl exactly compete with one another, but a girl can dream, can’t she?

The 2-part season finale of Gotham airs next Monday night at 8:00pm ET on FOX.
